The “Photon Font Administration” (fontadmin) application has some issues.
Indeed, the whole Font mapping management scheme seems to have issues … it
could be just me though ;o)
Anyway …
I added the TrueType font “Times New Roman”. That is, I placed it in the
font directory. It “appeared” as “Times New” in both ped and fontadmin
(logged in as root). I would have thought it should appear as “Times New
Roman” as it does in Windoze.
Anyway, still logged in as root I tried to create a mapping for “Times New”.
I clicked on “” in fontadmin. Typed in “Times New Roman” in the
“Mapping” text widget and selected “Times New” in the “Installed Font” combo
box widget. I then clicked “Apply”. In the mapping list appeared …
" Times New"
Nothing appeared in ped to suggest I had added a mapping.
Also, the whole idea of mapping fonts seems somewhat curiously implemented.
I notice that Times is mapped to “times”. However, in ‘ped’ I can select by
both the mapped name and the unmapped name. I can also select all the
unmapped fonts, except for a few like “WingBats SWM”. (I assume there is
some reason for this.)
If I can humbly suggest …
All fonts should be mapped by default to match their official name (except
those, like Useless, which you specifically wish to remove). Only the mapped
fonts should appear in a font selection widget. When a new font is added to
the font directory it should be automatically mapped to match its official
name.
There probably needs to be a font selection combo box widget like in the ped
speedbar (that self-populates with font names).
Finally, IMHO, font mappings should typically be capitalized. The default
mappings that the user initially gets should be capitalized.
Thank you for your insight, it will be taken into
consideration, especially the “Roman” one.
Thank You.
