4 OS on 1 system...

I have a 3 hard disks system with P!!!-800mhz.
on the first hard disk (C:), Win98 is installed (20Go)
on the second D:, Win2000Pro SP1 is installed (10Go)
on the third drive, I want to make 2 partitions (twice 8 Go) and then I
would like to install on the first partition CorelLinux Second Edition and
on the second partition, I will install QNX (it should be a RTP version) to
automate some external components (digital servo-motors on a flight
simulator).

My question is :
will my boot files on C: (win98 disk) installed by win2k be deleted by the
linux or the qnx install ?

is it better to unplugged the C and D hard drives while I install linux and
qnx (then they will be replugged). As I have never installed QNX on a system
containing anothers OS’, I really don’t know what the problems could be.

will I have to use an external DOS-mode programm to fix the boot or is it
possible to manually extend it to indicate the two new OS…?

thanks for your help

Hi !

You have to install QNX on primary master, else it won’t work…

Someone who has read my question in this NG has directly replied to my mail
recipient.
For those of you who are interested in my problem, you will find (below)
what he told me today. Will it really work ?

maybe your Bios allows you to choose a Boot Sequence:
Floppy, HDD1, CDROM
you could change the HDD Number.
The constraint will be to quickly press the esc or del key
to enter Bios Setup, make the chane, save and reboot which should be quick.
Maybe this doesn’t work.
A alternative is to buy HDD Racks (15us$) and put the right disk at
boottime.
Finaly, some softwares like VmWare (no free) can make multiOs work at the
same time.
I won’t recommend this unless you have multiples CPU.

I must admit that QNX is more important for my project than Linux. But
however this doesn’t clear the situation.

I will try the following :
win98 on the primary IDE disk (master)
win2000 on the primary IDE disk (slave)
qnx on the secondary IDE disk (master)
I will first make a backup (stream system) of my data contained in w98 and
w2k
then i will format all HDD and remove all boot information.
Then I will install the OS in the mentioned order.

I will keep you informed of the situation.

Thanks for your help

You should be ok with just boot floppies of the other os’s ( but back up anyways,
it never hurts). There is an issue with booting off the 2nd hard drive. the easiest way would be the removible drive trays

I agree, IMHO removeable drive racks are the way to go. No SW headaches, and
portable too.

I’d start by installing win2k on primary partition - then other OS’es in any
order. When installation’s done I would add other oses to Win2k’s bootmenu
by using a program called bootpart ( http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm )
