Is QNX my OS?

I’ve never heard of QNX before. The website http://get.qnx.com/ doesnt give
me any information why I should use this new OS. What I want is an OS to
surf the web, download MP3’s, download big files, record music with my sound
card. Encode MP3. But it has to be, very stabel, very fast. It may be a bit
difficult (like Linux). It shouldn’t be buggy like Windows98. Is QNX my OS?

What are the system requirements? Can it run on a 486 or do I need a
PIII-800. The site doesn’t say anything! Does the system has a wide hardware
support?

The site says something about ‘real time OS’. When I click on “what is real
time platform anyway” it doesn’t explain what it is! I know what real time
is: ‘like recording a wav file, when my computer encodes it real time to
MP3, it does it at the same time as the recording’. Is this the right idea?
But what is a real time OS then? What is not real time about Windows98?

Thanx,

HS

I’d say W2k is your OS.

  • Surf the Web, Voyager doesn’t handle everything
  • Download MP3, that’s no problem
  • Record Music that’s a problem
  • Encode MP3 that’s a problem (available stuff is very low quality)

Not in this case, for a full explanation check out

But what is a real time OS then?

What is not real time about Windows98?

EVERYTHING

Best solution: buy a Mac or use BeOS.

GFX-Card should be Riva-TNT-based.

Real-Time-OSes are often used in embedded-systems like a car or a
Nuclear-Power-Plant. The predictability of the task-scheduling is
the main problem and RTOSes have to be predictable. So Real-Time
does not mean fast (but QNX IS fast ).

Look at these sheets:

For what you would like to do, I would recommend using BeOS. (www.be.com
or free.be.com) This comment might start a flame war here, but I haven’t
found anything that beats BeOS at handling media files. Check it out.

Ditto what Sasha and John said.

BeOS is awesome for media.

I have to give a third vote for BeOS, it has low system requirements, (ie
high end 486 although I would recoment an Athlon) and it is the consumate
media and studio operating system. It just dousn’t do embedded sytems as
well as QNX though.

Everyone says that.

No-one explains that.

Guess I got to.

No-one ever says what is special with Be and the “media capabilities”.
What can it do? With what?

Well, too much OT rant, but not as OT as this thread is =)
