Carrier detect failed on Tx

Can anyone explain why I would get “Carrier detect Failed on Tx” error on my
network connection ? I am using an SMC Elite Network card with IRQ 10 Port
300. I have equal numbers of Packets transmitted OK and this error.

“Carrier detect Failed on Tx” means that the NIC didn’t think it could find
an ethernet on the cable. Might be a loose connection, bad cable, a
bad hub or connector, or a bad NIC.

(That is, basically, an error reported by the hardware that we just track
and report. Not one generated by our software.)

We have the same message at some D-Link DE-220 Ethernet cards

(Net.ether1000). Besides this, the network connection seems to be OK,
and under Windows the card operates without any failure. I think it
must be an incompatibility between the driver and the card.
