Is you phone cord connected to the right plug in the modem?

No dialtone would mean the modem can’t detecat the dialtone.
That’s the noise you hear when you pick up the phone.

Which version of the dialer are you using(which -l dialer)?
When you edit the dialer entry, what are your modem settings?
What type of modem do you have; is it a winmodem, isa or pci?

Do you have call waiting? When you pick up the line do you hear a dialtone?

Hallo!
Try ATX3 in the Modemsettings. Maybe you’re using a PBX with a nonstandart
dialtone?!
