Problems with corrupted file systems...

Looking for help. I had a system running QNX-2.4, and I just upgraded to
QNX-2.5. During the installation I discovered that, though a SCSI
controller was detected, the Hard Drive actually used an EIDE controller.
Using that controller I successfully installed 4.25. After installing the
upgrade, I went through all of the new “*.425” files and resolved any
differences with what I had before – which was very little. I took care
with the ‘/boot/build/hard.1.425’ (which I copied into ‘/.boot’) and
‘sysinit.1.425’ (which I merged with ‘sysinit.1’). After all of this, I
decided I should see that I could now boot off of the HD.

When I try to boot off of the HD, I get to the beginning of the boot process
where it says:

Searching for Boot Record from Floppy…Not Found
Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0…OK
Press Esc for alternate OS…

Then it just sits there forever, never getting further. If I try to boot
off of the boot floppy, it successfully completes the boot up process. But,
I can’t do anything with the file system – it keeps saying “Corrupted file
system detected”. I’m stuck! Can anyone help me?

When you boot from the floppy, try running chkfsys on the hard drive device
(look in /dev for the hard drive device) and see if it produces anything.
I’ve had corrupted file systems before (if you read the newsgroups, almost
any question I post is about file system corruption . chkfsys can repair
it most of the time, only once in a while have I had a system that became
completely unrecoverable by any recovery software.

Also make sure your BIOS settings for the drive are correct (LBA vs CHS etc).
That can really confuse things.

WARNING: If you start Fsys.eide it defaults to expecting the hard drive to
be in LBA. We have found that
if you setup the hard drive as CHS and Fsys.eide expecting LBA the QNX
system will end up overwriting the
QNX boot loader at some point as the drive fills up. We have tested this in
2.1GB, 4.6GB and 6.0GB drives.
