I need to upgrade the OS and Photon on several installed nodes. All the
nodes boot from their own hard disk but some (Allen Bradley Open
Controllers) do not have cdrom drives (or floppy drive) fitted.
Is it possible to upgrade these nodes from another machine on the network
which has a cdrom drive ?

Sure. Probably the easiest would be to do something like:
prefix -A /cd=//1/cd
Though, you should also be able to point the installer at a CD drive
on another machine.

Tried using prefix as suggested. Ran photon on node needing upgrading adn
clicked on add/remove icon, activity and then nothing. Shut-dwon photon and
following message on terminal
//7/cd0.0/bin/pkginstall terminated (SIGSEGV)
Any other suggestions
Thanks
