Dell Inspiron 8200 questions

Hi -

I am considering getting a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, to run QNX 4.25 and
Photon 1.14. I have a few questions:

  • Is the on-board modem usable from QNX, or is it a “soft” modem, which
means I’ll have to get a PCMCIA modem for QNX use?

  • What chipset is the on-board network interface, and does QNX support it,
or will I have to get a card for the network interface?

  • The video chipset nVidea GeForce2 Go is available for this machine. The
QNX website says that Photon supports GeForce2, but no mention is made of
    “Go”. Any comments?

  • If I get a R/W CD drive, will it behave like a normal CD-read-only drive
under QNX, or should I try to get a true CD-RO drive instead?

Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I am considering getting a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, to run QNX 4.25 and

You will have to check with Dell to see if there is a hardware UART onboard.

  • What chipset is the on-board network interface, and does QNX support it,
or will I have to get a card for the network interface?

Again this is a question best directed at Dell, once you know what the chipset is
you can check our supported hardware pages online:

http://www.qnx.com/support/sd_hardware/

  • The video chipset nVidea GeForce2 Go is available for this machine. The
QNX website says that Photon supports GeForce2, but no mention is made of
    “Go”. Any comments?

The GeForce2 Go is not supported under QNX4 Photon 1.14. However the controller
should work with one of the generic drivers (i.e. no acceleration).

  • If I get a R/W CD drive, will it behave like a normal CD-read-only drive
under QNX, or should I try to get a true CD-RO drive instead?

There should not be any problems reading from a CD-RW drive.
