Inspiron 8200 and NTFS

Hello,

I am having a curious problem with my Inspiron 8200. Perhaps soemone can
show me the light. I used partition magic to create my 500 MB partition for
installing QNX 4.25. I then try to install and after using fdisk, where I
set the partition to type 77, it tries to mount the drive using mount -p
/dev/hd0. It wants to mount my NTFS partition which is of type 7. I think it
thinks that this is a QNX 2.1 type and is trying to mount it but fails.
Thus, my install fails too. Alas, I am in a quandry. Can anyone help me to
see the err of my ways.

Thank you in advance,
Mike Van Dooren

QNX does not support NTFS you have to use FAT/16/32

I don’t think qnx4 installer will try to mount it even if it is
truly a qnx2 partition.
If you insist that’s the problem, you could boot the partition magic
floppy disk and hide the NT partition. qnx4 installer won’t see it
as qnx2 then.

Hi Mario,
The partition I want to install on, is a FAT partition. It looks like this

33 MB Dell Partition type 222
500 MB FAT Partition type 77 (this is where I want to install)
28,000 MB NTFS Partition type 7 (the XP partition)

I am having the feeling it is stuck on the size of the drive now.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Frank,
I am just guessing that this was the problem, and I think you are right. I
now think it has more to do with my drive size. But I thought that 4.25
handled that.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks all,

It turned out to be that when I ran the install I needed to use the -p
option, but I had to include the “eide” specifier in the quotation.

install -p “eide -c heads,cylindars,sectors”

The Fsys.eide driver needs the “eide” to tell it what option type (Fsys or
eide) the -c is referring to.

Thanks for any help offered.
Mike

If it were me, I wouldn’t put a FAT on a partition and give it type 77.

Yes, I know that appropriate command line options can force the
interpretation of it as a FAT, but type 77 IMPLIES a QNX file system.
