too many open files

Hello,

I’m having an issue with QNX 4.25C in that when I run “find” I get a “too
many open files” message.

Any thoughts?

This happens on both network and stand alone set-up and I’m running QWindows
as the GUI.

If you’ve seen the same or similar, could you let me know how you corrected
it?

Thanks
Dave

Been there, done that :slight_smile: I boosted the -H parameter to Fsys (I have 3 x 120G
drives – do you have big drives?)

There might be other parameters to boost, in Proc IIRC…

Search this newsgroup for “Too many open files” :slight_smile:

Hi Robert,

The drives are EIDE 40 GB Maxtor or Western Digital, (couldn’t get the
Seagate 40GB to be seen past 7.9 GB) in this case, but I’ve gotten the same
message on 6.4 GB. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll give them a try.

Funny though this same software seems to run fine in the QNX 4.24 OS.

Thanks
Dave

Hello again,

Saw your name on sysmon, it’s still working great.

Anyhow, can’t find a -H for Fsys. Is is a hidden function for Fsys? When I
do a use on Fsys I see a number of options, but no H.

Any additional thoughts?

We can’t even get some nodes to boot into QWindows now because there’s too
many open files. Yikes!

I might have too few earlier newsgroup messages because the search didn’t
return anything for me.

Thanks again.

Best regards
Dave

Here are the first few lines from my /boot/build/ file:

4.25 boot file

sys/Proc32
$ 1 Proc32 -H -f 16 2048 2048

sys/Slib32
$ 1 Slib32

sys/Slib16
$ 1 Slib16

/bin/Fsys
$ 1 Fsys -f4096 -H900000

I recall changing the -H on Proc32 so that it “dynamically allocates resources”
or something like that, and the “-H900000” on Fsys is the original -H in question…

900k may be “excessive” but I haven’t heard anything from QSSL to suggest that
it’s “bad” :slight_smile:

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
-RK

Thanks again.

Following up on my own follow up :slight_smile: I have a utility called “eatfds” that
just tries to open as many files as it can. If you want a copy, lemme know
(send me an email or post) and I’ll put it somewhere you can get it or
attach it via email.

When I started having the problems, “eatfds” would only be able to open
30 or so files. When I fixed it with the -H900000, eatfds could open
well over 900 files :slight_smile:

It’s a good testcase to see if you’ve fixed the problem without having
to run your system for a few (days/hours/weeks) and have it fail later.
It’s also a good diag to run periodically to see if the number changes :slight_smile:

Cheers,
-RK

One other thing to try is osinfo. It should let you know if you are up
against the limits set by the -f param to Proc. fsysinfo does likewise
for the -f and -i options to Fsys.
