Booting problem

Hello,
Until yesterday, I had no problems booting into my machine. But this
morning, my machine wouldn’t let me login. It gives an error saying “shadow
file missing : may not be able to log on”. How can I log on? Do I create a
recovery floppy? Please advise

Thank you,
Shashank

If your shadow file is missing its not a big deal. Simply
create a recovery floppy (instructions on how to do this
are included with the QNX4 Installation and Configuration
guide). Then boot your system up, either remove the shadow
file that is currently there or mv it somewhere else as a
backup just in case.

Then restart the system login as “root” with no password
and start to recreate your passwords (run passwd {username})
and have each user re-enter their passwords.

NOTE: Try logging in as “root” before you create your
boot floppy, as you may be able to log into the system
using that ID. If you can then recreate the passwords as
stated above.

Regards

Erick

Hello,
I created a recovery floppy by following the instructions
in the Installation & Configuration user’s guide. But when I tried to boot
using the floppy it says “Press Esc for alternate OS” and when I hit the
escape key the machine just hangs up.
In the instructions to create the recovery floppy it tells us to modify the
sysinit file. But my QNX is on node 1. So do I have to rename the file to
sysinit.1 on the recovery floppy? Also the instructions direct us to remove
the non-QNX entries from the termcap file. Since I wasn’t sure of the QNX or
Non/QNX entries I just left the file as it was originally.
Thank you,
Shashank

Hi Shashank,

Don’t press Esc, just let the floppy boot on its own. Pressing
Esc will tell the loader to use “.altboot” which your floppy
won’t have on it.

The purpose for the altboot/altsysinit is in case you made a
change/zero’d/cat’d whatever your orginal .boot file or
your sysinit. It is basicly a backup incase something goes
wrong.

Best regards,

Erick

Hi Erick,
If I just leave it at “Press Esc for alternate OS” the cursor
keeps blinking and it does not boot.

Thank you,
Shashank

Hello,
I could boot from a floppy. After starting the hard disk driver and mounting
the QNX partition, I was able to make changes to the shadow file and can
login now. What do you think could have caused this sudden problem ?

Thank you,
Shashank

Not sure, but checking your other post the drive MAY be dying. I would
backup your information on the drive, just in case.

Best regards,

Erick
