mount

Hello,
I am trying to boot the QNX partition from my boot disk.
I gave the following command
mount /dev/hd0t77 /hd.
But it gives an error:
mount() of /dev/hd0t77 failed: Input/Output Error.

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks,
Shashank

Yes, I did
mount -p /dev/hd0 and this command returns success fully. But
mount /dev/hd0t77 /hd fails giving an I/O error.

Thanks,
Shashank

Can you put dcheck on your floppy and see if that works against the
hard disk? You don’t have to mount the disk, just do a ‘dcheck /dev/hd0’.
If that works, then we will need the traceinfo output when trying to
mount the drive.

Thanks,
Shashank

dcheck /dev/hd0 worked fine.
I have attached a file that contains the tracevents
generated after giving:
mount /dev/hd0t77 /hd and getting an I/O error.
Your help is sincerely appreciated.

The trace output that you sent shows a status of “uncorrectable data error”,
so I guess you have a problem with that disk.

Well you might get lucky and by reformatting the drive things may look
ok for a while, but do you really want to use a drive that may get
corrupted on you at any time?

There are ways to backup the drive, they can be found here:

Sorry, re-read that, and the drive may not get corrupted (as it passed
dcheck), however something
odd has happened. Try backing up the drive and re-installing and see what
happens.

As of now, I can only boot from the boot floppy. When I try to mount my hard
drive from the floppy I get a mount I/O error. Is there a way to backup the
hard drive from the boot floppy ? If there is no way to backup the drive
from the floppy, then have I lost all my data? The dcheck on the hard drive
worked fine. I also did an fdisk on the hard drive and it showed me the QNX
partition.

Thanks for the help.

Well you might get lucky and by reformatting the drive things may look
ok for a while, but do you really want to use a drive that may get
corrupted on you at any time?

There are ways to backup the drive, they can be found here:

The trace output that you sent shows a status of “uncorrectable data
error”,
so I guess you have a problem with that disk.

Previously, Shashank wrote in qdn.public.qnx4:

I have attached a file that contains the tracevents
generated after giving:
mount /dev/hd0t77 /hd and getting an I/O error.
Your help is sincerely appreciated.

Can you put dcheck on your floppy and see if that works against the
hard disk? You don’t have to mount the disk, just do a ‘dcheck
/dev/hd0’.
If that works, then we will need the traceinfo output when trying
to
mount the drive.

You first have to do a “mount -p /dev/hd0” and then “mount

If you can find an identical drive you can raw copy the data to the other
drive.

e.g. cp /dev/hd1 /dev/hd2

Note the two drives MUST be identical to do this. You may still get io errors
though.

Another way is to use this util:

http://quics.qnx.com/cgi-bin/search/usr/free/?srch=QNX_Drive_Copy&submit=submit&select=1

However this will only work if you can mount the drive you want to backup.

Best regards,

Erick

As a data-recovery guy, the drives MUST be IDENTICLE.
That means the same geometry, model number, batch number…
If you can find a drive with the same virtual geometry, but is
larger in capacity, that MIGHT also work, but it’s questionable.
I have seen it work often, though.

Another way is to use this util:

http://quics.qnx.com/cgi-bin/search/usr/free/?srch=QNX_Drive_Copy&submit=submit&select=1

However this will only work if you can mount the drive you want to backup.

and yet another way is dd
dd if=/dev/hd0t77 of=/directory/imagefile
I think I’ve got the syntax correct…
This would cause dd to make a bit-for-bit copy of the
partition, and place it bit-for-bit in an image file.
The device on which the image file is created must be
able to hold the entire capacity of the source partition,
as that’s what it’s going to get.
This will work as long as the system can recognise the existance
of the source device, whether it can mount it or not.
