QNX and DSL

Hi;
How can I use high speed connexion to internet under QNX OS?

Thanks…

That can be tricky since it depends on the ISP. And most
ISP don’t easely give the necessary information.

If it doesn’t work with the default installation it can be tricky?

How is it setup under Windows?

Good luck. Two problems. PPPoE and your D-LINK DFE-530TX (I assume since
that is what many/most Sympatico users have) network card.

  1. PPPoE is as far as I know not supported under QNX. You can get around
this by using a hardware router or setting up and old 486 as a
    firewall/gateway. That’s what I have done. I have a DX33 with 24M running
CoyoteLinux which supports PPPoE natively. Now I can use ANY OS that has
TCP/IP and not have to worry about PPPoE.

  2. The driver for the D-LINK card “exists” somewhere. It’s called net.via
or similar (the chipset is the Via Rhine). Problem is, the driver never
left Beta and isn’t on the cd. You could buy another card of course. But I
am surprised that this chipset isn’t supported. I use it under Windows,
    Linux, BeOS etc…

I emailed QSSL about the Via driver and am waiting for a reply.

If you can get your ISP’s DNS server IP addresses, shouldn’t be too much of
a problem (just use the Network config GUI tool). My DSL is working fine,
and that’s through a LinkSys Ehterfast DSL router.

Good luck, it’ll be worth the effort–this OS so far seems incredible!

No. You are using a router which supports PPPoE. BUT, without the router
you would be out of luck. QNX, as far as I know, does not support PPPoE.
Without PPPoE support in the OS and without some sort of
firewall/gateway/router you are out of luck.

Actually, I have a static IP coming out of my DSL modem (I have a static IP
account), and it’s always on.

Be a shame if some couldn’t use their DSL/Cable connections…

Well, it’s going to happen. For sure. Many DSL providers us PPPoE. That’s
why I decided to set up an old 486 as a gateway. Now I don’t have to worry
if an OS supports PPPoE. I just enter my desktop’s IP, gateway and DNS’s
and I’m done.

Now, I have to see if I can drum up a driver for my DFE-530TX. I think I am
dreaming on this one though.

I agree, make or buy a gateway (router). You can buy a cable/DSL router for
~$100 US from any number of companies. Most do NAT translation and have either
a hub or switch as well. NAT makes a pretty good firewall so you can set up
your internal network pretty loosly. Many of the boxes allow you to expose
ports or even a complete computer to the outside world if you like (and your
ISP allow - AT&T @home service does not).

I’d like to see this as well. I’ve been running the 4.25 version for ages and
it’s still not on the 4.25 supported list.

I just don’t want to buy another card just to run QNX. I’m already annoyed
that there aren’t any Geforce2 drivers for BeOS. The solution to that one
is even more expensive.

None of these alternative OS’s offer the apps I need to make doing more than
experimenting worth the hassle/money.
