Hi,
I received my CD about a week ago. First off all a BIG THANK YOU to QSSL for that! Even with all of my >10 years QNX experience, it’ll be like starting over.
Right now I’m on a discovery trip through the system. I could add to all the “greate stuff” and “good show” comments, but I guess you must’ve already gotten over a thousand of those posts So I’ll just stick to the todo/wish list.

- Installation
The installation was a breeze. I was up and running in 5 minutes. Thanks to the newsgroup postings (a great source of information!) I knew how to get my ne2000 network card and the big tcpip stack working (also after reboot).
I’m not sure about one thing, though: I had already installed qnxrtp from the downloaded ISO image (hey, I couldn’t wait . When I got my officially shipped CD, I used the Package Manager to add everything it offered me. Is there a chance that the shipped CD contains older packages than the downloaded version? Does the Package Manager recognize and warn if an older package is being installed over a new one?

- Video card
I have an S3 ViRGE/DX card. IIRC, there was a post about this stating that the driver only supports 60HZ refresh. This is a bit too low. (The flickering is noticable) Since I’m to new at this, I’ll wait and hope that there will be an updated driver available.
\
- Soundcard
Ah yes, everyones problem Mine is an ISA card and has an OPTi 82C924 chip. Pretends to be “SB compatible” like so many other cards. Right now I’m gathering all sorts of docs and sources from the web and then I’ll venture to write some kind of startup program to configure the card in “compatible mode”.
In the mean time, I hope someone reading this post already knows of a util/driver for this chip and is so kind to point me to it…
\
- Dialer
Seems to work OK. I still need to figure out the correct way how to configure it to override my default route. (Right now I’m connected via ethernet via a simple QNX4 gateway serving as a NAT router.) This is a minor issue though…
\
- Vmail/Voyager
Another cause for many posts. Vmail definitely needs to be improved (or maybe there are config options I’ve mist?). It does more communication than needed. For instance, if you leave all your mail on the server after reading them, it shouldn’t reget them when you connect the next time. The same goes for news articles. If you select “display all articles” it appears that it regets the old headers. Netscape, for instance, “remembers” all the mail and newsheaders and only fetches the new ones, wheater you select “show all messages” or “show new messages”.
What I also miss right now is a spell-check feature. I could save my text and run Ispell in a different window and then copy the corrections, but it’d be nice to have this feature hooked in.
As for Voyager, well, as expected it’s missing the java stuff. I take it this is in the works(?)
Both Vmail and Voyager seem to occassionally freeze up (sort off). Vmail would sometimes get in a state where when you click on an article header the message body doesn’t show up. Slaying voyager.server and restarting, seems to fix this. A reproduceable way of pushing vmail in this state is to just click on an URL link in a message. (I accidently discovered this when I wanted to see the picture of that woman really partying big time, of which Donna Kinsman said that it’s definitely NOT her
=========================
Those points are “first contact” issues. A newbie will encounter these problems first thing. If he/she has never heard of QNX before, a wrong impression might be the result.
So far for now. If I encounter more interresting issues, I’ll post them. In the mean time you can count me in as one of the enthousiasts. Right now I’m using qnxrtp at home, purely on a hobby basis. But I’ll grasp every upportunity I get to catch the interrest of our managers at work. But first I need a convincing show. One thing that might help a lot is if there’s an MS-Word like package. I’ve seen some posts about StarOffice mentioned in other threads. I don’t know this package, but if it does things like MS-Word, it’ll help a lot.
regards,
rick
