Downloading and installing?

How do I download and install stuff that is in the .tar.gz format?

Where do I install it?

I downloaded phICQ, and somehow I managed to unpack it and get it running,
but in what directory should the phICQ file be installed?

I also downloaded the wheelmouse fix, but I dont dare to try and install it,
I might mess up my mouse so it doesnt work.

What I (as a former Win user) would like is an automatic “unpacker” with a
graphical UI, like a “winzip”, that could unpack and install files to the
right dir.

Now that I did manage to unpack the phICQ, can I move the file to the right
dir, so that it is usable both as root, and as any other user?

Thanx!

gzip -cd | tar -xvf -

or

tar -xvzf (but this gave some grief to me and some other
people)

Anywhere in your PATH.

Once you unpacked it, copy it to /bin, so it will be in the search path
before standard driver.
Make sure it is executable (chmod +x /bin/devi-hirun).

There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ place. Any place is good as long as it is
in your PATH environment variable. I’d suggest /usr/photon/bin for ICQ.
