Is this like Linux?

Is Qnx like a refined and slimmed down Linux based system? How would
someone who knows describe it? Pointers to applicable info is appreciated
also.

TIA

Dave

It is more like simplified/slimmed down Mach 3.0 system

Hi Dave,

See the following site for the QNX System Architecture guide:

My description… Well, it’s not a Linux system. Linux is, basically, a
style of Unix. QNX is along those same lines. It’s basically POSIX
compliant, it has the same sort of text interface, it has a similar format
for the file system (using /dir/dir instead of c:…), you can run many of
the same programs from Unix-like systems on QNX (with a little tweaking of
the source, usually), and so forth. So, initially, it’ll probably feel like
Linux to you, with many of the same commands and whatnot, but there are
different commands, and not to mention deep, fundamental differences.
Having toyed with Slackware (a couple years ago), RedHat, Mandrake and
Debian (remotely), I’d have to say that RTP is smaller, faster, more
efficient, has better inate security, has better corporate support (ie,
patches, drivers, Q&A, etc), has a good, firm base to it, has a better
GUI… In my opinion, it’s superior. Of course, various Linux distributions
have an edge in their name, their long-standing availability (until just a
little less than a year ago, you couldn’t get any QNX for free), the ‘faux
geek hip’ trend, and a few more years of drivers, software and papers. It
is also my opinion, however, that at the current rate, RTP could well
overtake Linux in most of these fields in a year or two.
Of course, these are just my opinions, and I’m somewhat biased, as I
cursed Linux up and down for all the complications and problems, and QNX has
been a relative breeze for me. Even all of my hardware is supported,
without having to spend hours reading docs and optimizing drivers!

Hi Dave,

See the following site for the QNX System Architecture guide:
http://www.qnx.com/literature/qnx_sysarch/index.html

Not to be a nitpicker, but …
This document looks to me like it is intended for QNX4. Since this is
qdn.public.qnxrtp.newuser, I would expect that we are talking about QNX6
(aka QNX RtP, aka Neutrino, aka Augusta, aka…). So wouldn’t this be the
correct doc?? http://www.qnx.com/literature/nto_sysarch/index.html
