MODEM TROUBLES - No Carrier

Hello I am hoping that someone could help me. I have a cable modem
installed which I use with Windows 2000 no hastle what so ever. I have on
the other hand given up trying to get my cable modem to work with QNX as it
seems like a no hoper , unless of course someone else is using a Motorola
Surfboard Cable Modem with QNX??

But anyways my initial question was, I am now trying to use a real modem
with QNX, its connected to ser1, and when it attempts to dial the speaker
comes on and it beeps all over the place, but doesnt actually successful
make the call, as the dial tone just keeps on going. I get a message after
a few seconds after that says “No Carrier”, what the hell does that mean??

I have written down all the commands that QNX sends the modem and have
attempted just that in Windows 2000, and again I get the “No Carrier” error
returned.

I would be most greatful if someone could help me, I’m thinking maybe that
QNX is sending the wrong commands??

Slight correction to this message, It now dials and then sits around trying
to log me in for about 30 seconds then hangs up and says, guess what?, “No
Carrier”. I have tried automatic login and interactive login methods but
they both have the same effect. Do I have to turn the carrier on or
something?? what is a carrier??, and WWWWHYYY???!!!

NO CARRIER simply means that the modem isn’t connected to any other modem. If you would successfully log on to your ISP or whatever, and then log out and hang up, you would get the same message. Thus, it is not an error, and not really a clue to what is wrong.

When you say it tries to log you in for 30 seconds, does that mean it finishes handshaking (the nasty sounds) and starts communicating, then fails, or does it try to handshake? If the handshake is finished, then it’s probably not a modem problem, but a problem with your network settings and your ISP…

If the problems occur during handshake, and only under QNX, then it might be time to dig up your modems manual. It usually contains a full list of the modem commands availiable and what they mean.

My understanding of NO CARRIER is the modem isn’t connected to a phone line.
The modem needs something to carry the signal (the phone line) and it hasn’t
detect one. I beleive the modem listens for the HUMMMMM sound you hear when
you pickup the home. In you case it seems the modem

If you have a phone line that doens’t have that HUMMM sound, it’s a
“non-standard” phone line and you need to setup the modem accordingly (check
the manual for the proper command to send)

Mine is a Cuber Surfer and is working fine. QNX doens’t even know it’s a
cable modem,
it talks through it via Ethernet!!!

The problem may be your Ethernet setup or an incompabilibity between the
dhcp client (QNX)
and server (your ISP)

When the modem is not connected to a phone line I get NO DIALTONE.

I believe that NO CARRIER mean that either the other end never answered or
the other end answered and then hung up.
