editor for QNX

Does anyone know of a good free editor for QNX 6? I’m currently using emacs
on a Windows-based computer. Is it possible to use emacs on QNX? There
isn’t anything on the GNU website to indicate that this is possible, but it
seems like it would be.

Other suggestions for an editor would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Tom,
I use workspace. It’s a good Photon’s editor for C sources. There is .qpr package as attachment in
the qdn.public.qnxrtp.devtools newsgroup.

Eduard.

VIM is the way to go. Really nice for C code etc. I believe it is packaged
with RTP, else check out www.vim.org. I do dread VI, but VIM is much much
nicer, and easier to use.

I suggest looking at Jed - is it a very good rewrite of Emacs. It is
available on the WWW Repository. It uses the Slang interpreter as opposed to
Emacs’ Lisp interpreter.

The package also include xjed - an X Windows based version which has full
color support, etc. You’ll need the X Photon package as well.

Coincidentally, I just downloaded and built the latest jed yesterday to
chase a bug. You also need slang (as Bill said). Slang’s configure script
needs to be ‘libtoolized’ to recognized QNX but builds perfectly as does jed
and xjed.

Agreed, vim+ctags is really nice.

VIM question:

Since I am still not satisfied with any of the RTP editors (I’m the one that
loved vedit) I am interested in checking out VIM. So,

  1. Is there a place to download a RTP6.1 compiled version?

Look in your /bin directory. It may be there.
I installed from the 6.1 CD.

  1. Is there any good documentation or better yet a tutorial for VIM?

Try F1.
It’s all I ever needed.

  1. Does is work in text mode?

As far as I know, that may be it’s only mode !

I should have looked closer…
vimtutor is also in my /bin directory.
Must be part of the package… ?

  1. Is there a place to download a RTP6.1 compiled version?

You can get vim 6.0 (patch 11) from the repository at
qnx.wox.org/repository/6.1/ . It has many improvements over vim5, and
it’s also time to make an updated package…

  1. Is there any good documentation or better yet a tutorial for VIM?

There’s the tutor, online help and a user manual which is good to read.
http://vim.sf.net has a collection of tips and scripts.

  1. Does is work in text mode?

That vim 6 binary works in GUI or text mode (as long as the photon libs
are avaiable).

I’m now hooked on workspace, as it has ctags as well.

Wow! I’ve just installed it … rock’n’roll!
There is a huge difference between vim 6 and 5
Thanks a lot for the port.
IMHO, This link has to be added to QSSL’s page

cheers,
Igor

PS. I wonder if there is vim6 port for QNX4,
that would be truly amazing.

Edward:

I upgraded to your latest version, but when I go help->about… the
window says that it is 0.3N Is this the case, or am I doing something
wrong? How do I kow that indeed I am running the latest and greatest?
Also, if I want to run from a command window, how do I get it going?

Regards…

There’s still a few things I want to add, such as better
internationalisation support and the client-server capabilities.

It should compile ok without the GUI.

I upgraded to your latest version,

but when I go help->about… the

0.4A is quite better than 0.3T (the last one of 0.3 series I’ve seen). You see it at first second
of workspace running.
I’ll check all those things in my copy of workspace this night and I’ll answer the questions above
tomorrow.

Also, if I want to run from a command window, how do I get it going?

$ /usr/photon/bin/ws

Usually enough (if you have correct path variable setted)
$ ws

I’ve had the same problem. I had to go in the installer and removed all
the version expect the latest one. (This solution was provided my Michel)

No one has yet mentioned NEdit. For those unfamiliar with emacs and
vi (or disliking both), NEdit is a pretty good alternative. If you
are used to he Microsoft-ish key strokes Ctrl-X, -C, -V for delete,
cut and paste then you have a head start on the learning. NEdit also
has some neat features for transferring blocks of text from one window
to another.
The home base for this editor is http://nedit.org with QNX6
conversions at http://sourceforge.net/projects/qnxfree and ~/openqnx.
