I had a similar problem and it turned out I was using a Winmodem. These are
modems which rely on manufacturer’s drivers etc… to operate (they save
costs by not including everything on the modem.) Whereas these work fine in
Windows, they will not work in other operating systems (although I heard
there may be a fix for Linux.) If I was you I would buy a Serial Modem, they
are quite cheap at the moment.
I´m using a Modem Blaster flash 56k external. I try to use it in both,
serial 1 and 2, and the problem is after call to my ISP. The “Fatal Error
11” is “Hold off”. I use other computer to try to connect with my computer’s
serial port (/net/computer1/dev/ser1) and have the same trouble… The
network is running right. would I have any trouble using a network device at
same time that the modem?
