Sound Blaster Live in QNX

Hi there,

When I boot into QNX I have to disable the audio drivers or it simply
hangs during boot. I have a Sound Blaster Live Digital. I am very new
to QNX and have been looking around and found the following lines to
mount my sound card (as I believe),

io-audio -dsb ioport=220,irq=5,dma=0,dma1=5 &

mount -Tio-audio -oioport=220,irq=5,dma=0,dma1=5 …
/lib/dll/deva-ctrl-sblive.so &

As I know very very little about QNX I wrote these two lines into a
terminal. The response was that my PC hung just like it does on boot.
Does this mean that my sound card isnt compatible or does this mean that
I am simply typing the wrong information?

I would also like to know how I go about modifying the default boot
options, as I would like to either to get the system to disable the
audio drivers automatically on boot or startup the correct driver. Is
there a file located somewhere that contains a similar line as above
that is causing the system to hang? Again, I know very little about QNX
and file system is very different to me so It’s a bit dangerous for me
to rummage excessively. Thanks in advance.

Nick.

Hi Nick,

With regards to mounting your audio driver, we should try and find out why its
hanging the system to start off. If you could post the output from the
following while logged in as root:

pci -vvv
sloginfo

Docs on those two utils can be found here, which explain what they do:
http://www.qnx.com/developer/docs/momentics_nc_docs/neutrino/utilities/p/pci.html
http://www.qnx.com/developer/docs/momentics_nc_docs/neutrino/utilities/s/sloginfo.html

Also it looks like you are starting the driver twice. Typing the following
command should get it going for you:

io-audio -d sblive &

The docs mention a mount command. That is an alternative way of mounting
drivers into the io-* manager. It is implied that io-audio is already running.
See the docs on mount for more details on that:

http://www.qnx.com/developer/docs/momentics_nc_docs/neutrino/utilities/m/mount.html

FYI, to disable the automatic mounting of the sound card, the system boots
up and calls a series of scripts, those scripts then call more scripts etc…

Take a look at the following:

/etc/system/sysinit

look in there for something called “# Enumerate the devices…”

This calls a script /etc/rc.d/rc.devices

What this does is it will enumerate all the different cards/chipsets in
your system and attempt to start drivers for them.

In the rc.devices script, it figures some stuff out (look at the script
for more details) and then calls a utility called enum-devices.

It uses the files located here:

/etc/system/enum/devices

In that directory there is a file called “audio”. Look in this file
for something that calls “deva-ctrl-sblive”. Once you find this, you can
either comment out (use #) all the way back to the “device(pci, ven=$…”
line.

Doing this will stop the system from automatically starting the driver for
you.

Take a look at the following docs for some good details on this stuff:

http://www.qnx.com/developer/docs/momentics_nc_docs/neutrino/utilities/e/enum-devices.html

Best regards,

Erick

Hi there,

I couldnt actually work out how to get all of the information displayed
with the -v option as there was so much. Without the -v option I got 1
page of information, this is…

PCI version = 2.10

I have an on board sound card which is disabled via the BIOS, could this
be the issue? I could not get the information from sloginfo either as
there was too much again, being able to save all output from the
terminal would be handy but im too much of a newbie to know how. I have
managed to stop my system from hanging on boot byt remming out the sound
blaster live driver from

/etc/system/enum/devices/audio

I have tried to type in the line you suggested

io-audio -d sblive &

But it hangs my system just the same. I hope the information I have
give helps a little, if not let me know how and I will supply more
information. Thanks for your time.

Nick.

You might want to invest in a book on basic UNIX that will teach you
concepts such as output redirection. For example:

“pci -vvv” by itself prints out more information than will display on
one page. “pci -vvv | more” prints it out one page at a time. This is
called piping. Another option is to redirect the output of pci -vvv to a
file: “pci -vvv > /tmp/pci.txt” Now all the output from pci -vvv is
captured in a file which you can open and edit.

Hi Erick,

Here is the output from pci and sloginfo as you requested. I hope that
it is all okay.

Nick.

Hi Nick,

Can you try running the following commands after startup:

slay io-audio
io-audio -d sblive pci=0 &

Let me know how that works out. Also can you post the output from:

uname -a

Thanks,

Erick

Hi Erick,

After typing the line ‘slay io-audio’ I recieved the message “slay:
unable to find process ‘io-audio’”. And then after typing the line
‘io-audio -d sblive pci=0 &’ I recieved the message “[1] 536606” then
the system hung.

I will write the output from ‘uname -a’ as there is only 1 line, which is,

QNX 1 6.2.0 2002/05/21-12:17:24edt x86pc x86

I hppe this information helps, seems like its going to be a confusing
one, which is pretty typical for myself. Thanks for your help again.

Nick.

Its nice when correspondance comes to a stand still, hence I have lost faith
in QNX many a time.

Nick.

I disclaim anything that was previously
stated in this post, it wasnt me I didnt do it…

So have I. If it isn’t the audio, it is the network drivers. Without being
able to communicate properly over a TCP/IP connection, any projects I want
to do get sent to Linux. I really, really want to use QNX, but setting up
hardware is such a pain, and most of the time I will look for information or
post a question and all of a sudden, my problem with QNX goes forever by the
wayside.

As I know very very little about QNX I wrote these two lines into a
terminal. The response was that my PC hung just like it does on boot.
Does this mean that my sound card isnt compatible or does this mean that
I am simply typing the wrong information?

This seems like it is likly a compatibility issue. Perhaps the card is
locking up the PCI bus due to the driver. Have you tried this with 6.2.1
yet?

You can disable the audio driver by simply deleting it from /lib/dll or
by editing the file in /etc/enum/devices/audio and removing your device
from the list of PCI ids.
