Installation directory?

There is NO way I will install QXL into C:\Program Files\QXL. Is there any
way to change the installation directory to C:\QXL?

Espen

For the moment there is NO way you can change that. If you can’t
show a little bit of flexibility for this beta, then it’s probably not
for you anyway

You best bet to get this improved in the future is to make a problem report

Oh, I already did that. I even reported it as a critical problem. I have
like a billion titles on my shelf, which is unused because of stupid
problems like this. And I don’t need another one…

BTW, does anybody know how to only install SpeedDisk from Norton Utilities?
I hate the other stuff … and where it installs to.

Critical??? I thing we have a communication problem here,
maybe I misunderstood what you problem is. This is far from critial
it’s just a matter of convenience.

I don’t understand, what do you mean “billion titles on my shelf”.
Shelf is not a Windows concept. And is it that is unused?

Gasp!!!

Why does inalling under program files seem like a critical problem ?
What exactly are your concerns, loss of data ? Overwriting of files ?

If you have multiple drives you can install to ?\program files\qnx. When
I install I usually install to the d: or E: drive.

In the past few years, I’ve used a “system” for where files and applications
are installed. With this system, anyone can find any file or program they
want. If I have it that is.

I.e: I have three folders in C: (since my system is in norwegian, my folders
is too

  • Demofiler (Demo Files)
  • Programfiler (Program Files)
  • WINDOWS

I’ve even moved the original Windows applications to
‘C:\Programfiler\Windows’. (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Plus!,
etc…). And in ‘C:\Programfiler’, I have folders for ‘Internet,
Multimedia, Programs, Games, etc…’.

The thing is, ANY application which installs ANYTHING into a folder I don’t
want it to install to, gets terminated. I uninstall it, and NEVER use it
again … like Norton Utilities.

Interesting. Kinda strange, but interesting. So if a program refuses to be
installed where you want it to be installed, you don’t install it because it
would be hard for someone else to find it if they wanted to? You may have
missed out on the one or two worthwhile Windoze applications ever created in
the name of rigid filesystem naming conventions!

(now for the actual constructive part)

I’m not sure if MicroSchlock actually does links the way most Unices do, but
couldn’t you just stick a link from “C:\Program Files” to “C:\Programfiler”
so everybody sees what they want to see? I wouldn’t doubt that there’s some
Windoze “gotcha” in there that’ll make it impossible, but that’s what I’d
try.

It has nothing to do with me wanting to let anyone find anything on my
computer. I just want a tidy hard drive…

I’m not sure what you mean with ‘stick a link’, I think maybe I do, but I’m
not sure. Well, anyway, if an application won’t let me choose the install
directory, on principle I won’t touch it. First impression is VERY
important, and if an application isn’t user friendly when it installs, what
are the chances it is user friendly when I’m using it…

By “stick a link”, I mean create a link called “C:\Program Files” which
points to your desired directory, which I assume is “C:\Programfiler”. That
way, applications can happily install to what they think is their standard
directory, but they end up exactly where you want them. I know you can do
that with RtP, QNX4, Linux and so on, but I’m not sure that Windows links
work the same way (I remain blissfully ignorant of the details of Windows,
thank goodness!).

-Warren

That is a pretty bold assumption to make. The RTP is not a released product
yet, so one can naturally assume that there will be limitations to the
features of the product. Having the ability to install to alternate
directories may, or may not get added in the future.

If you are serious at testing and using the RTP you will have to accept the
current installation directoy or try one of our other installation methods:

-Installing under QNX4
-Installing the RTP to its own partition

Well I might believe that the organization of your directory is a wonder to
behold, but unless you’ve re-written major pieces of the operating system,
there’s no way you’re going to account for the inherrant instability of
Windoze by moving things around on your hard drive. Perhaps you have much
better luck than the rest of us because of your discriminating taste in what
applications you’ll allow to run. Maybe there’s some wisdom to your
methodology…

then install it to D, E, F… /program Files/…
if you have extra partitions the installer will ask you which to install to.
btw why don’t you want to install to c:/program files ?
