Patch A on non-pci machine

I tried to install patch A from a CD. Installation went smooth, but
when I reboot the machine it hangs with following error messages:

pci_server: PCI_Startup failed !
/dev/pci did not mount

Can I not use patch A on non-pci machines (it worked before) ?
