SCSI CD Rom access in package manager hangs system

I have had problems with installation onto a scsi based system.
Scsi controller is on-board 78?? adaptec.

When I try to install from floppy/CD into a partition it tells me there
isn’t one available or there is no free space on the disk which there
defintely is - like 5G!). Disk has one Fat32 partition, rest unpartitioned.
I’m going to rebuild this system with primary 2G Fat16 (NT), extended 2G
Fat32 (W2K), rest unpartitioned. Then I will try again.

When I do a windows file based install it completes and I can boot from
floppy (Win2k) and run.
BUT when I try to access CD to add packages it freezes and hangs the
systems.
Have had varying degrees of success with package manager reading the CD.
Once it almost completed a package before hanging.

Will Patch A or B help?
I have internet access working and I think there is a way to patch it over
web - not sure how but I believe its possible.
Question is, will this help or am I wasting more time.

Any suggestions appreciated and TIA.

Mike

There is installer bug which causes that effect. It does not matter how much
space you have free, it will always complain as long as there’s an existing
partition on drive. Not sure if it was fixed in patch A or B.

When I do a windows file based install it completes and I can boot from
floppy (Win2k) and run.

If you feel brave, boot from floppy into QNX and run fdisk. Write down
partition table. Then hold your breath and clear it. That is non-destructive
operation, as long as you can reproduce the table afterwards.

It will trick the installer into thinking the drive is empty and then it
won’t complain about insufficient space. Make sure to choose ‘run fdisk to
edit partition table manually’ during installation. When it starts fdisk
reproduce the Windows partition and create QNX partition too.

BUT when I try to access CD to add packages it freezes and hangs the

I’ve seen similar behavior but your problems might be different. When system
‘hangs’ it is almost always an impression. Normally is is just some
rendering system unusable. Try to run high-priority program on another
console and see if it continues running when hangup appears. Something like
‘on -p 50 pidin -l’ should help to see.

Will Patch A or B help?
don’t know, but should not hurt to try.

THANKS! WOW! Can only install on an empty disk!
Do they really think people will overwrite their existing OS to run this?!?
I guess there is the QNX in a windows file version.

I may give this a try.

Mike
