can't boot from install floppy

I’m trying to install QNX RTP on an HP XE3 PIII 800 MHz
128 MB laptop. It is already running Windows 2000.

I follow the installation steps which tell me I have to
create an install CD so that I can put QNX in its
own partition.

The problem occurs when I then try to boot from the
floppy. I get

Press ESC for arlternate OS …

etc

Is there anything that needs to be done in the BIOS
to get the install image to work? I tried the disk
in a pc already running RTP and it worked fine.

I would really appreciate any help.

Michel

I’ve seen similar problems on certain BIOS revisions of our JumpTec boards.
(Newer isn’t always better.) I’ve been told it is an interaction with the
QNX
power management stuff, and that QNX has helped others directly to
workaround
the problem, but I haven’t yet contacted them about it.

Seems to work fine if I boot from the CD.
Could be a problem with the BIOS floppy
setup.

What qnx power management stuff are you referring to?
I haven’t seen any mention of power management in
any of the docs.

I was just relaying information I have received from the
hardware manufacturer. It is definitely related to the BIOS,
since older BIOS versions for the board worked fine in my
case. QNX has supposedly helped others to create workarounds
with similar problems. My impression (from the hardware
manufacturer) was that it was a QNX problem and not a BIOS
problem.

I haven’t tested RTP patch B yet, so I don’t know if that helps.

Hi,

How are installing RTP?
Did you download the Windows self-installing file?
If so you can not in any way install RTP to its own partition.
The boot floppy that you can create with this package will only boot into RTP if you installed it
onto your windows FAT partition.

The need for this floppy is that on a Windows 2000 or ME machine there is no longer a config.sys
which QNX used to create a boot menu when installed on win95/98. Because the is no longer a
config.sys there is no way to set-up the option to boot to RTP without a boot floppy.

If you want to install RTP to its own partition you will have to boot off of the RTP CD-ROM.

Regards,

Joe

Hi,

How are installing RTP?

I believe Michel and I are doing different things, but have a similar
problem. The “boot” disk
that I created was with mkifs and a .bld file. I use this disk so I can
boot embedded boards
with network support so I can copy my install files (actually an older
version of neutrino) to the
ide flash on the board. This boot floppy has the endless “…” problem on
certain BIOS revisions
of the embedded board. This is the same symptom originally described in the
email. (These
boards also can not boot the Jan 18, 2001 install floppy. Windows has never
touched these
little embedded boards.)

Even using -O to dinit didn’t help…

There is a limitation on the size of boot image you
can boot. This size varies from machine to machine
depending on how much `conventional’ memory your
laptop steals for nefarious things.

We’re working on boot loaders that get around this
limit, but with what you have now, that is the
situation.
