Install problems.

I’m trying to install the most recent release of RTP. I’ve been able to
install all the previous releases, but this one just isn’t working for
some reason. Whether booting from an install floppy or from the CD, I
get a number of … (about 3/4 of a full line) and then

Shutdown[0,0] …

followed by a jumble of things… And my computer is completely locked
up.

Any ideas what I can do to get this working?

That jumble is:

Shutdown[0,0] S/C/F=11/1/11 C/D=ff80e517/ff841050 state(c0)= now lock
[0] PID-TID=1-17

That last 1-17 might actually be 1-12… I’m having a hard time reading
my handwriting.

Adam

Anyone? I’d hate to give up for something that hopefully has an easy fix.

This looks like a kernel crash.

There’s no problem booting the kernel on an SMP machine, is there? What
about RAM limitations (I’ve recently upgrading to 640 Megs of RAM)?

There shouldn’t be, however by default the installation uses only
one processor.

I don’t know of such a limitation.

Hi

We have a system running in house with 3GB of ram, so your ram is
not the problem.

The OS guys will have to comment, but can you start the system
using the verbose mode? (Press space at startup when prompted).

E.

How many CPUs are on the system, what is the brand name of the system?
What type of CPUs are being used? What does the verbose mode report?
Have you tried disabling all but one CPU?

Any extra information about the system would be helpful - The are issues
with Dell systems and SMP. There is a patch coming out soon for 6.1 that
should fix a few SMP problems.

I’m not prompted to press the space bar. Remember, this is during the
installation (I don’t yet have a running system), and I never get to a
point where it tells me I can hit the space bar

How many CPUs are on the system, what is the brand name of the system?

2 CPUs. It’s a Tyan mb, VIA KT133A chipset.

What type of CPUs are being used?

Intel Pentium III.

What does the verbose mode report?

I never get prompted to hit the space bar for verbose mode.

Have you tried disabling all but one CPU?

I can’t find an option in the BIOS, so the only way to do so, at the
moment, would be to pull one out. Though I can certainly do that, I’d
rather not, if possible.

Any extra information about the system would be helpful

Well, I’m not sure what else I can tell you at the moment

  • The are issues
    with Dell systems and SMP.

It’s not a Dell. I bought the motherboard and processors and built the
machine myself.

There is a patch coming out soon for 6.1 that
should fix a few SMP problems.

I’ll keep my eyes open.
