QNXRTP/6.1.0 and VMWare/2.0.4

Hi.

I am a software engineer in Irvine, CA and a friend of mine mentioned I
shoudl check out QNX RTP. So I downloaded the ISO, burned an image and
loaded VMWare.

VMWare works for a multitude of operating systems, after I send off this
news I’m goign to contact them as well.

My problem is I cannot boot th einstaller, from a lfoppy or CD-ROM, under
VMWare 2.0.4 as it causes VMWare to throw an exception and crash.

So yes shoudl be contacting VMWare first, maybe, but liek I said VMWare
works with several operating systems, I currently run Solaris, OpenBSD and
several versions of Windows for software testing and QA. So there’s a
slight possibility someone in the QNX crowd might know what the bootloader
does that might cause this, and possibly get in touch with VMWare to get it
resolved.

Thank you for any responses.

VMWare did not work with any version of QNX, I have tried QNX2, QNX4,
the first beta of the RTP and so on. If you look onto the webside of
VMWare you can see, that QNX is a non supported OS. I think this is
because QNX very deeply changes IRQ and MMU handling (much more than any
other OS) and the VMWare people are not able to provide a running
emulation of these deeply modified chipsets. VMWare itself is a
combination of really running client code on the CPU (normal register
access) and emulation of some methods for register access ( IRQ, MMU,
IDE-Chipsets, Networking-Chipsets, Sound-Chipsets and Video-Chipsets).
If there are any timing dependencies within the client-OS, then the
emulation possibly fails (especially if the client OS “knows” the timing
of a special piece of hardware).
So I think not the boot-installer itself fails, it’s the OS itself, that
was unable to completely initialize the CPU.

Hi Shaun,

Why you do not wish to install QNX RTP in a file on the FAT partition under Windows exactly? IMO,
it’s a good solution for software testing and QA

Eduard.

Or get a second computer and access RTP through phindows. That way on the
same machine you have both access to Windows and RTP.

Oh sorry I miss that.

Note that it’s possible to boot from the CD and run it without even
installing it on the HD. If there is a fat filesystem on a hd you
may then be able to write to it.

VNC is a better choice then. With a VNC windows client, you can
access a remote RTP GUI. This is for X application on RTP, but
phinx should allow you to run Photon apps too.

Is phinx distributed with RTP?

posts like below seem to say it is available for RTP:

http://qnx.iaware.org/pipermail/qdn.public.qnxrtp.os/2001-June/003542.html
http://qnx.iaware.org/pipermail/qdn.public.qnxrtp.os/2001-July/003848.html

I am sure Garry Turcotte will be able to help you more, though
this means the sales of phindows will go down

We are entirely win2k based here, in the short I will be buying hardware
specifically for testing QNX.

Win2k + NTFS == no qnx. We use vmware specifically because of this, and the
closest thing we have to running from a file on a fat fs is running wnx from
a win9x install under vmware… but it wont even work from within vmware (i
don’t blame qnx dev’s in the lsightest either).

So, that’s the reason.

If we begin working with QNX I highly doubt we will be doing ‘the windows
thing’, so I don’t even want to assume that route. But I will be buying
hardware it’s my only solution really.

Free isn’t my main concern, it is merely the quickest solution in most
cases.

I want to evaluate QNX, yes, but I’ve got deep pockets to delve into. It
just so happens alot fo our cross-syetem testing, development and
interoperability is done via VMWare. I was only hopeing to find a
reason/solution for my VMWare woes was all.

Win2k + NTFS == no qnx.

You could set free some place on the hard drive and install RTP into own partition. Maybe you need
pqmagic for creating primary unformatted partition, but it is not a problem. There is no problem to
use Win2k boot loader for OS select during start-up (I think you like that boot menu ). This way
no require additional hardware and it takes about a hour…

Anyway, VMWare is not best solution for evaluation of realtime OS.

Regards,
Eduard.

I understand what shaun means. I also tried qnx with vmware, but failed.
It will be so much easier if qnx works with vmware. No need for additional
hardware. No need to deal with partition issue, not to mention if the hard
drive doesnt have any unformatted partition. No need to deal with loader,
either.
Unfortunately,…
Also, I dont see any problem using vmware to just “evaluate” qnx. By the
way,
I did use vmware to try out 1.44.M qnx demo. It works fine, though no
network.

Later version of QNX4 (4.25 and beyond) do not work with vmware. And QNX6,
as you have noted, does not work either.

So, please feel free to send email to the guys @ VMWare to fix the bugs that
are causing QNX to fail.
