How to Install QNX6.01 if my bios does not support booting f

I tried first a win98 bootable fd ,when it booted,I tried to run the
setup.exe in the QNX CD,but it reported that the programme could not run in
dos. Then I built a QNX bootable fd which installed and mounted the CD,when I
tried to run the setup.exe,it reported that I have not the permission, then
what shall I do the next?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Put the CDROM into a PC running Windows, you should see
the QNX RTP setup screen. One of the options is
“Make floppy”, which will make a bootable floppy.

Or:

Try looking on the CDROM, you should see an image there,
called instflop.dat This is a bootable QNX RTP floppy

Then open a MSDOS box if you’re in Windows, change directory
so you are in your CDROM drive, and type the following:

qmakedsk.exe instflop.dat a:

This will copy the image file to the floppy.

You can then boot from this floppy into QNX,
and it should find your CD drive.
Then you can follow the instructions on-screen
to install from the CD.

This was what I did to install QNX RTP on my TB486 card,
which didn’t have windows on it, and it doesn’t boot from CD.

Hope this helps,

Richard

I bet your TB486 had a CD drive on it, even though it wouldn’t
boot from it?

The floppy made from the install CD looked for a CD-ROM
drive at the end of the boot process, and and on
my CD-less PC locked up with “…D”

Just run the setup.exe program from Windows, or just boot off the CDROM when
your computer starts up. Note: you can’t run setup.exe from QNX as that is
a Windows/Msdos program.

ok, I have question deeper than standard ones

I was trying to install QNX 6.1.0 from CD on relatively old notebook
from IBM (Thinkpad 2640/560/W95 model). Since original CD drive with
PCMCIA card has been lost, I found another CD drive in the lab
(Panasonic KXL-808A with its native ATAPI/PCMCIA card) and tried to boot
from it. It failed and it looks like it fall to this case
http://qdn.qnx.com/support/bok/solution.qnx?10417 . I’m sure that burned
CD is correct one (I have installed from it few times), but situation
described in page mentioned above makes me stranged. Ok, now I’m on thin
ice of suggestions how to deal with problem  You see, it looks like
your developers decided that CD drive should be init’ed and ready before
EIDE scanner starts to scan. It works fine in desktop PC world, but in
case of notebooks it is not that good. CD drive might be attached via
PCMCIA card, and that card might be ATAPI card. Therefore, it worthwhile
to do PCMCIA business first if there is PCMCIA controller available, and
only after that try to find CD drive, ain’t it? Nevertheless, I’m
very interested to get any suggestions/workarounds/etc how to deal with
my problem.

Install the small windows setup and do a network install for the rest.

-Adam

You mean to install WinXX on hardrrive, then use it for network install?
Apart from legal issues, I don’t like idea to have that on my HD - I
would like to have clean QNX partition installation. I thought you have
something non-standard about how to cope with PCMCIA during boot/install
phases. Ok, I see - you are just doing daily job  I’m very sorry for
wasting your time.

Yes, I connected a CD drive and a CompactFlash card up using
a horrible array of 2.5inch and 3.5inch IDE cables, some headers
and some adaptors… it looks horrific but it works!

I have seen the “…D” thing as well, I think this was
some failure in the IDE hardware ( bad connection, or my tiny DC-DC
power supply can’t give enough juice for the CDROM to spin up
and stabilise - it spun up and down all the time during installations )

My main problem is I can’t get the QNX RTP to boot up after an
installation, but I think this is lack of RAM, or the Elan’s
special reset register/TB486’s watchdog timer being accessed
by the hardware detection routines.

I guess the solution is to build a custom image onto the CompactFlash
card, but haven’t worked out how to do that yet!

( any help or advice appreciated!

Richard Bebbington

P.S. Glad to see Chaoli has got RTP installed!

Definately not a waste of my time, someone from the hardware group would be
best at answering if we have something that aids in your need to do a PCMCIA
install.

-Adam

Hi Silicon:
I have a fantastic way perhaps you can have a try.pull the harddisk down off
you laptop and install it to another computer which can support CD-ROM
booting, install the QNX in to your laptop harddisk, then install back the HD
to you laptop ,see if it can work.Because I found it is at the starting time
does the QNX scan the hardware, not like the winxx which store the hardware
information in its register table,so,perhaps the way will work. But I guess
you have to boot in safe mode first and change something for photon(such as
run crttrap manually)
the IDE interface of your laptop HD is a little smaller than that of a
desktop one,if you will try my way in a desktop computer,a extra bridge
board is needed to connect the smaller IDE HD to the larger IDE cable.
hope this will do you help, you know I am a newbie,so,if the way is
ridiculous ,please let me know.thanks
Best regards.
