QNX 6.1 boot hang: getconf missing

Hello,

A few weeks ago, I posted a problem I’ve had getting 6.1 to finish booting,
following a clean partition install. After a series exchanges with Erick
(sp?), I believe, the thread disappeared from the newsgroup after a long
wait for a response from QNX support. Unfortunately, I can’t quote the
thread, since it’s gone now.

Anyway, I still am unable to get QNX 6.1 to boot, and have backed off to
6.0, which does boot just fine, and where I will stay until Support can
offer any help in getting around this problem. What problem?

The boot sequence hangs midway through, following these messages:

Generating helpviewer search database.
/etc/system/sysinit[81]: getconf: No such file or directory

Any help in getting past this roadblock would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
–dave

Hi Dave,

I think I forwarded this to our apps guys. Getconf is a utility for
getting configuration information. There is a call to getconf in
the sysinit

getconf -s CS_TIMEZONE $TZ

See if you can boot using the safemode with no Photon (F1 then F3,
I belive) and see if getconf is present. It should be located in
/usr/bin/getconf

Also the size and other information should match this:

-rwxrwxr-x 1 root bin 17780 Aug 29 13:42 /usr/bin/getconf

At least for a 6.1.0A installation.

Take care.

Erick.

Hi Dave,

I’ve seen something very similar too, when I was trying

to install RTP onto a clean harddisk on my old 120 MHz
pentium machine in work ( my QNX dev machine )

Unfortunately, I’ve no idea what’s causing it or how to get
around it ( I gave up after 4 attempts at installing )

I’ll be interested to see what it is…

Regards

Richard Bebbington

Actually come to think of it I have no idea who I might have
forwarded this to, heck, could have forwarded it to myself

At this point, I’m no longer in a position to exactly reproduce the 6.1
environment I had when this problem occurred, but I’ll be glad to try again
if you could give me some pointers on managing two versions of QNX on one
hard disk.

Since having the trouble with 6.1, I backed off to 6.0, and installed that
in a partition that occupies 1/2 of the 2.1GB drive that I have available
for QNX, thinking that I’d leave 1/2 open for 6.1, should I ever get back to
it. That’s still available. But I didn’t install any sort of partition
manager software to deal with more than one partition.

So, now having put 6.0 on one half, is there a procedure you could recommend
for assigning the other half to 6.1 and perhaps a partition boot manager
you’d recommend for switching between the existing 6.0 partition and the new
6.1 partition? I’m a little clueless in this area of dual-boot and such,
sorry. I’d really rather not clobber my 6.0 environment, if at all possible,
as I’m using it actively for Audrey hacking.

And in the interest of installing the latest and greatest, you mentioned
6.1.0A – is there a download image for that release, or will I need to
start with the base release and then apply a patch for “A”?

Thanks,
–dave

OK, I set up to try booting 6.1 again, this time within a Windows file
rather than as a separate partition, but I got very similar results (missing
getconf).

Before trying again, I went back through the whole download procedure again,
this time using a friend’s PC with a different (Adaptec) CD-burning package,
to eliminate some doubts I had as to whether my CD might have been corrupt.
You see, when I try to read any of the CAB files on the qnxrtp.iso CD with
either WinZip or WinRAR, both report “invalid or corrupt CAB file” errors
(WinZip claims that the “CAB signature bytes” are missing.

Q1: Why are these CAB files reported as invalid? Is there a known bug in
your packager?

I also get this error on the new CD I burned on my friend’s machine, so at
least it’s consistent, and less likely to be random corruption.

Moving right along, after installing under Windows from the qnxrtp.iso CD, I
reboot, selecting QNX (with DMA), I first verified that I got the same ol’
symptom:

Generating helpviewer search database.
/etc/system/sysinit[81]: No such file or directory

Following your advice, I tried to boot again, this time with safe
mode w/o Photon, and verbose mode. I booted up into the shell with no
problem, and poked around a little. Getconf is indeed where it should be:

-rwxrwxr-x 1 root bin 17812 Jun 22 09:17 /usr/bin/getconf

This differs from your example, since I’m booting off the base QNX 6.0
release CD. But it’s there, dammit!

So then, I think, “What’s the PATH set to?”. So I peeked at
/etc/system/sysinit, line 81, which is the call to getconf; OK, so what’s
the last PATH setting? It looks fine to me: definitely includes /usr/bin,
so that’s not the source of the trouble either.

I give up. Your turn.

Thanks,
–dave
