#9 Motion 711 Video Card and Other Performance Comments

I installed QNXRTP on an old P-233MMX with a S3 based #9 Motion 711 PCI
video card under QNXRTP 6.1. When trying out video modes during the
install, all of the S3 driver modes produced no visible mouse cursor, so I
booted with the standard VGA16 driver. I then loaded up the video mode
configuration dialog, changed to the S3 driver, checked the “hardware
cursor” checkbox, and things worked fine. It might be useful to expose
this option in the installer, or default this checkbox on when you detect
the #9 Motion 711 PCI card.

To be honest, the install still went smoother than the average Linux
install. The QNX package installer is much nicer than similar Linux
utilities and the bootup process is faster.

The only major performance issue I have so far is that scrolling with
the mouse wheel in Voyager is quite slow. I can scroll “10 clicks” and it
takes Voyager quite a while to catch up with the scrolling (~20 seconds of
flickering). I’m using a standard Microsoft Intellimouse.

Hi Erik,

Could you please download the graphics information grabbing
script from:

http://www.geocities.com/erickmuis/files/hardware_scripts/nto/

DO NOT START PHOTON.

Then extract the scripts and login as the root user. Once you
are logged in as the root user, please run the script:

…/grafxscript.rtp

Once the script has run, please send us the output.

Thanks

Erick.

Sent via email to hw@qnx.com.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the output, we checked here and we unfortunatly don’t have
a similar card to test this on. We have a feeling that it is b/c there
is no hardware cursor on the card that you have.

If you would like to send the card in we could take a closer look at it
though.

Also another option would be to take a look at the graphics DDK and see
if you can find the docs for the card someone on the net.

Erick.

The Motion 711 uses the S3 968 chip, which supposedly supports a
hardware cursor, at least according to searches on google and google
groups.

I’ll be happy to send it in if your group wants to look. Just send me
the address and other necessary details via email to eb AT techie.com.

Unfortunately, S3 no longer makes graphics chips and doesn’t have any
DDK information on their web or FTP sites that I can locate.
