486

hi,
I think, I need help.
I wanted to install QNX 6.1.0, but I’m not able to do this.
I’ve got a 486DX33 with 4MB RAM. My computer isn’t able to boot from
CD-ROM,
so I tried to run Windows95 and boot from Windows95. After installation,
I
reboot, and then the computer types :
“Press ESC for .altboot…”. After a few seconds, the computer
reboots.
I also tried booting from Windows95 with my PII266 with 128MB RAM. And
again, the computer reboots, afer “Press ESC for .altboot…”.
But booting from CD-ROM with my PII266 works.
Then I put the harddisc from the 486DX33 in my PII266 and try booting
from
CD-ROM. But after installing QNX and installing the harddisc again in my

486DX33, it doesn’t work.
The size of my harddisc is 400MB.
Is there a possibility to install QNX on my 486? I hope, someone can
help
me.
Perhaps, you can explain me exactly, what to do, because I’m a beginner
in
QNX.

Hi Sven,
You need custom image to boot your 486DX33. If your 486DX33 has no PCI bus you have to rid of pci
server, also you have to pass custom parameters for disk driver (devb-eide) in order to use tiny
memory cache and don’t use dma. Since 486DX33 has only 4 mb ram, you will have to rid of package
filesystem. You could use your PII to creat this custom image. And since you are beginner you want
to read help on mkifs, dinit and other stuff:
http://qdn.qnx.com/support/docs/neutrino_2.11_en/utilities/about.html
Also read two articles, they are good help for you:
http://qdn.qnx.com/articles/oct1901/Using_buildfiles.html
http://qdn.qnx.com/articles/oct1901/Using_buildfiles2.html
Best regards,
Happy New Year!
Eduard.

Hallo Eduard and *,
first I want to thank you a lot for the answer. I learned much about build-
and image-files.
But QNX still doesn’t work with my 486DX33 . I’ve tried many different
versions of buildfiles through the whole night, but not any of them work
with my 486DX33.
For example, I tried the Buildfile #1 Version of the Using_buildfiles2.html.
First I’ve tried it with booting from floppy-disc, then I’ve tried it with
booting from hard-disc. Both versions work with my PII. With the 486DX33,
one version always reboots after typing “Press ESC for .altboot…” (the
floppy disc version), and with booting from harddisc, the computer hang
after typing “Press ESC for .altboot…”. I left out the “pci-bios” entry
and package filesystems, as you told me, in much versions, but it wasn’t
much useful
I hope, you can help me again.
I wish you also a happy new year.
Sven

Did you try to lower the address the image boots at by
specifying an [image=…] attribute in the image definition, or in the
-l parameter of mkifs?

Hello Sven,

Take a look at
http://www.qdn.com/support/docs/neutrino/utilities/s/startup-bios.html
Try “startup-bios -vvvv -Dconsole” in buildfile #1, write this image to floppy disc
#dinit -f myimage.ifs /dev/fd0
And look at output on your various computers during boot from this floppy.
Also take a look at -f cpu_freq option of startup-bios. I did not try it since my 486DX
40MHz/9MbVESA runs well that image  (I’m not sure I was using ksh, “embedded shell” makes image
smaller).
Best regards,
Eduard.
