lpd with parallel port

There were some questions posted here a while ago about lpd with network
printing, but has anyone attempted to use lpd for printing from the
command line
through a parallel port?

I successfully set up my printcap file for using lpd to print to all my
network printers, but I also have a parallel printer that is not on the
network. QNX 6 does a nice job of using spooler to set up printing from

Photon utilities, but I cannot print correctly from the command line.

What’s strange is that I can print succesfully every other time. I’ll
usr lpr to print a file, and it prints. Then I’ll use lpr again, and I
get a blank sheet. Then it will print, then blank, etc, etc. Even
after reboot, it’s the same.

Is it a problem with the printer, or with my setup on QNX 6?

Extra info is below. I’d appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Printer: HP LaserJet 2100 TN
I’m running QNX 6.1.0 on x86, running from partition, not from Windows.

Printcap file entry for parallel printer:
mace:
:lp=/dev/par1:
:sd=/usr/spool/output/mace:
:mx=0:

/dev/par1 is running. sd directory exists… ??? I’m stumped.

Hello Edith,

Take a look at http://qdn.qnx.com/support/docs/sysadmin/docs/wip.html
in the “Connecting Printers, Terminals and Other I/O Devices” section.
This might give you some hints as to what to look at. Something else
you can try is to send the output to the console instead of the printer
to see if there is some strange output. Also try a few different files
to see if the problem persists.

Regards,
Dave B.
