can't boot PC104 from floppy

Unable to boot from QNX image floppy on a ‘Prometheus’ PC104. Boots from a
Dos disk fine. Appears to freeze after the last dot when booting from a QNX
floppy (.altboot …) using example and custom buildfiles. The
Prometheus has Pheonix 1.03 BIOS, console redirection has been changed in
the BIOS to always on serial port 2.

Any Suggestions?

I just installed QNX 4.25 to one of these last weekend. The only setting I
recall changing was for boot order.

Sorry,
Forgot to mention that we are using QNX ver 6.1.0. Floppy is the first boot
device. Right now, we only have the on-board 2MB of Memory until the 32MB
flash card arrives. Using Hyperterminal to view info on Ser2.

I had a similar problem with an Arcom board. It turned out that it was not
compatible with the QNX 6.1.0A startup-bios. Here’s the explanation from
Arcom:

“The problem with the startup-bios that is currently released is x86 startup
does not honor the Extended BIOS Data Area. The miscalculation causes
pci-bios to fail because v86 will not allow code to run from areas
identified as RAM at startup.”

They were able to send me a revised startup-bios that solved the problem.
They said this revision would be included in the 6.2 release. Perhaps
Diamond Systems can confirm or deny that this might be the problem.

We are also considering the PR-Z32-E-ST. Have you solved the boot problem.

No bootup yet. We are using, PR-Z32-EA-ST (with Data Aquisition),
communicating with the Prometheus using Hyperterminal through Com2 on the
Panel Board. Still no response from DiamondSys Tech Support.

Just talked to Steve at DiamondSys Tech Support. He mentioned problems
they’ve had with Console Redirection halting in Linux. Says, the system
searching for a video card or sending non-ASCII info would cause the console
redirection to cease. Steve suggested that we get a video card for the
prometheus, does anyone have an idea for a workaround?

I can’t see how console redirection can survive once QNX starts running.
The redirection is a function of the BIOS, and QNX doesn’t
use the BIOS (for the purposes of this discussion).

You would have to build an image to allow you to log in
via the serial port rather than the real keyboard & VGA.

Success,

I got QNX to boot and was able to communicate with the Prometheus through
serial port 1 by turning flow control off in edited mode.
devc-ser8250 -b115200 -e -F &
I have not yet been able to get it to work on serial port 2 yet, there
appears to be some kind of conflict between the Prometheus’s console
redirection and the serial driver, but if I turn redirection off, the system
won’t boot from a floppy.

Thanks for all the help,
