USB Devices Problem

Hi ,

I have installed QNX 6.2.0 NC on the Abit IT7 motherboard.

Abit IT7 has only USB ports (6x USB 2.0) so mouse and keyboard are connected
to them.

After installation mouse and keyboard don’t work properly.
I supposed that a new drivers can’t correctly recognize integrated on the
board A31 bridge (PCI to AGP)
and this is a reason why a graphics card has low rate of refresh. As a
result mouse works very very slow.

This is little strange because with previous version (QNX 6.0.0) everything
was ok.

Did anybody have some similar problems?

Any comments and hints will be very helpful.

Regards,
Jacek

Hi Jacek,

We are currently looking into adding support for USB 2.0, currently
QNX supports only USB 1.1

Regards,

Erick

HI Jacek,

Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I think the USB 2.0 controllers
can work in a legacy mode. What type of graphics card do you have? If
you can post the output from

pci -vvv

inline, then I can take a look. The video card may not be supported and
might be using the VGA driver, however if you can send me the output from
pci -vvv that would greatly help.

Best regards,

Erick

Hi,

no problem I attached the output from pci -vvv command.
The graphics card is Geforce IV MX 420 MSI (64MB). I know that card isn’t
supported and
it working with (devg-svga.so) driver. I download form the www.qnxzone.com
new “tweeked” vesa driver.
But I don’t check it yet.

When I try to run devu-uhci USB manager the following message apears on the
screen:
“Timeout on Control Transfer”. I found the similar post on the
qdn.public.ddk.usb newsgroup.
The solution of that problem is changing BIOS settings.

But what do I have to do if my BIOS doesn’t have any USB options?

Regards,
Jacek

Hi Jacek,

Could you post the content of pci -vvv inline (as text) on this
thread. My newsreader doesn’t support attachments (its a bit old).

As for the BIOS settings, typically the setting that has to be changed
is the USB Legacy Mode. This must be turned off.

Another thing to post would be the output from sloginfo after you
start Photon. I would like to see what messages are being dumped
there.

Thanks

E.

Hi,

no problem I attached the output from pci -vvv command.
The graphics card is Geforce IV MX 420 MSI (64MB). I know that card isn’t
supported and
it working with (devg-svga.so) driver. I download form the > www.qnxzone.com
new “tweeked” vesa driver.

Regards,
Jacek

Oh come on. Bite the bullet and install pine just for thos occasions
where you want to save attachments, or even (horrors) install
MS-Windows on a machine so you can use Outlook Express.
Or you can use GNUS in Emacs, or …

Incredulously,
Andrew

In article <b1s13o$60v$2@nntp.qnx.com>, hw@qnx.com says…

Truthfully I have never tried using Pine for newsgroups, however I’ll
give it a quick shot. As for a Windows system, I unfortunatly don’t
have a system that I can spare for that.

Ok. I’m on Windows, but I’m using a bit old newsreader… Can you save the message body as text file? I believe you can,
otherwise you need new newsreader urgent. So, after saving as file article.txt in “command prompt”

$ uudecode --version
GNU sharutils 4.1
$ uudecode article.txt
d:\bin\uudecode: article.txt: no ‘end’ line
$ edit pci.txt … Here you can use ‘vi’ or anything else…

Cheers,
Eduard.

Another thing to post would be the output from sloginfo after you
start Photon. I would like to see what messages are being dumped
there.

Thanks

Could you make a little comment about it?

The last questions:

Why my USB keyboard hangs when I run devu-uhci process?

As you know if I want to run some commands/applications on the Photon
startup
procedure - it’s simple I use “phapps” file.

Is there any similar solution when I shutdown my Photon session and exit to
text mode?

Thank’s
Jacek

Hi Jacek,

Your USB controller is running in legacy mode, I am working on something
that will flip it out of legacy mode so that it will work properly, I
am just getting some time to work on it (hopefully it wont take long).
Once its done I’ll give it to you to give it a try.

Best regards,

Erick

Hi Jacek,

I got something sorta working here, however I want to test it a little
more first.

I am just wondering, does the keyboard and mouse work fine until you
start the devu-uhci driver (in Photon as well)? Do you have other USB devices other than
the mouse and keyboard that you are trying to use in QNX?

Best regards,

Erick

Good news!

I am just wondering, does the keyboard and mouse work fine until you
start the devu-uhci driver (in Photon as well)?

Before devu-uhci driver start:

Keyboard works fine in Photon and text mode. Mouse works in Photon too
but very very slow.
I’m wondering how it’s possible that mouse works in Photon? This is very
strange because I don’t
run any driver for it at this stage!
Mouse behaviour was encountered only on computer with installed Abit IT7
motherboard.

To check this I plugged USB mice & keyboard to other computer. After
system start (in Photon):

  • keyboard works,
  • mouse doesn’t work,
    and this is properly.

When I start devu-uhci driver in text mode or in Photon (from terminal)
my USB keyboard hangs.

Everything is ok when I run USB drivers from “phapps” file.

Do you have other USB devices other than
the mouse and keyboard that you are trying to use in QNX?

Temporarily I have hp deskjet 5550 printer but I don’t try configure it yet.
This is a quite new product and I afraid that isn’t supported.
On the supported hardware web page I found the following information:

“Everything except the 720 amd 1000 Series should work. The PCL
protocol is standard.
The following printers have been tested: Deskjet 400 Deskjet 500
Deskjet 600 Deskjet 692 Deskjet 970 Laserjet 4”.

Is there possible to configure hp 5550 printer?
Did anybody make some tests with similar devices?

Best regards,

Erick

Jacek

The USB chip(s) on your machine are running in legacy mode. That is, they
are being handle through the BIOS (SMM) and being emulated as a standard
ps2 keyboard and mouse port. devi-hirun detects them as standard ps2
devices.

When you start devu-uhci the driver it attempts to program the USB
controller which attempts to take control of the USB chips from the SMM.
This is why your keyboard stops at this point. The text console works
directly with the keyboard/mouse controller through which your USB
devices are being emulated.

The current devu-uhci(6.2.0) assumes that the chip is not legacy mode
and programs the chip which will effectivly mess up the emulation.

To keep the keyboard/mouse working when you start the USB stack
you need to be in Photon and be using the Photon Input driver.

The 6.2.1 version of the driver does handle legacy mode but the
keyboard will still stop working once you start the USB stack.
The current text console driver doesn’t know how to get input
from a USB device.( This will change in the future )

So you need to either automatically boot into Photon starting
the proper drivers, or start them as you enter Photon from
a text console. And you need release 6.2.1 to get the USB
drivers that will take over the chip properly.

6.2.1 release is needed to take the chips out of legacy mode.
So what you can do in 6.21 :
You have 3 UHCI chips on your machine. Currently you would need
to start a seperate usb driver per chip.

  1. start usb driver for each chip on your machine. each UHCI chip

can support max 2 ports thats why theres 3 chips.

devu-uhci -p0 -n /dev/usb0
devu-uhci -p1 -n /dev/usb1
devu-uhci -p2 -n /dev/usb2

  1. now you need to start mouse/keyboard drivers

under 6.2.1 there is there first stage of a new input architecture

that will replace devu-mouse, devu-kbd

io-hid -dusb verbose=/dev/usb0,verbose=/dev/usb1,verbose=/dev/usb2

note : This loads the io-hid server with USB DLL to manage USB HID
compliant devices. The verbose option was meant to be ‘upath’
and will be changed to that in a future version. It is used
to tell the DLL to connect to multiple USB stacks.

  1. now you need to start the proper Photon Input driver.

devi-hid connects to io-hid and gets notifcation of device

insert/removal and data coming from the devices.

/usr/photon/bin/devi-hid mouse kbd

This would all need to be started together at as you are entering Photon.
You could possibly put this all in your phapps file.
You will not be able to return to text mode without losing keyboard.

Note in the future there will likely be a io-hid version of the console
driver so everything will work properly with text consoles. Also future
plans include a USB stack that will support multiple chips/chip types
through 1 driver/DLL and all this will eventual be started automatically
for you.

6.2.1 is now availble for download.

Hi Henry –

I have a similar problem. I’m trying to get a USB mouse to work with my
system without success.

Here’s my configuration:

  • Fujitsu C2210 Laptop
  • 4 NEC USB 2.0 ports (OHCI)
  • USB Legacy Disabled in the BIOS
  • I’ve upgraded QNX NC 6.2.0 to 6.2.1 using an ISO image on a CS and
    Installer

Here’s what I’ve tried per your steps. I started with the USB mouse plugged
into one of the USB ports, and then booted the system. I typed the commands
listed into a Terminal window.

  1. 4 ports, therefore assume 2 OHCI chips, start a separate driver for each
    chip

devu-ohci -p0 -n /dev/usb0

devu-ohci -p1 -n /dev/usb1

at this point

ls /dev

shows that /dev/usb0 and /dev/usb1 have been created

at this point

usb -N /dev/usb0

usb -N /dev/usb1

both print “USB (OHCI) v1.10, v1.01 DDK” and nothing else.
I would expect one of them to list information about the USB mouse.

  1. start mouse/keyboard drivers

io-hid -dusb verbose=/dev/usb0,verbose=/dev/usb1

at this point

usb -N /dev/usb0

usb -N /dev/usb1

both print “USB (OHCI) v1.10, v1.01 DDK” and nothing else.

  1. start the proper Photon Input driver

/usr/photon/bin/devi-hid mouse

at this point

usb -N /dev/usb0

usb -N /dev/usb1

both print “USB (OHCI) v1.10, v1.01 DDK” and nothing else.

…and the USB mouse still doesn’t change the cursor position on the screen.

Do you have any more suggestions? I would really appreciate your help.
