Does anyone have info about QNX on laptops?
Which ones “tend” to work? Which ones to avoid?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Martin

No specific information – but taking a QNX install
CD around, booting from it, and doing the “run from
CD” can be a great test of whether or not QNX will
run on the laptop.

Yes. I made up a QNX NC install CD with a nice label
that says “QNX Compatibility Test Disk”, and I try it
on various machines in computer stores. This has
been useful.
My success rate is about 50%. It’s not a vendor
specific thing, either. Going down a row of Dell
laptops of various models, about half of them
will run QNX. Some won’t even run the boot loader,
some have an incompatible Ethernet controller,
some can only run the display in VGA mode, some
have incompatible audio hardware, and some work
perfectly.

“some work perfectly”
You haven’t been keeping a list of the ones that work perfectly have you???
That would be a really nice thing to see posted on the newsgroups.

If I did that, someone would complain that it didn’t
work on their machine. Try before you buy. My point is
that it’s possible to get QNX to work on a useful
fraction of laptops.
I’ve tried six Dell and IBM laptops; three of them would
run QNX.
Has anyone ever tried QNX on a Panasonic Toughbook?

JE > Thanks,
The problem is that just because QNX works with this week’s model XYZ,
doesn’t mean it will run with next week’s model XYZ.
With many vendors a model number is a marketing device and NOT a unique
identification of hardware. I.E. If I spent millions of dollars
advertising “SuperPuter XYZ”, I don’t want to change the name just
because I had to change out an ethernet chip.
Then too I may be using a different ethernet chip without knowing it
because 3Com (or whoever) came out with a new chip but kept the same
designation.
So it is real difficult to say that Model XYZ works with QNX.
