Bad date will block installation

Amusing new discovery: 6.2.1 NC will not install on a system with
the date set in the past. For the second installer pass after the
reboot, the installer lists all the packages
as “unreleased” and won’t install them.

So set the clock BEFORE you install 6.2.1. This isn’t a
problem with 6.2.0, because that version only has a
one-pass install.

This is a FAQ even on pre 6.2.1 when using the stock installer.

Going to the QNX web site, we search for “installer” and FAQ.
We get:

http://www.qnx.com/news/downfaq.html

It’s not in there.

Then we check “Support”, and see the “QNX 6.2 NC Installation note”:

http://www.qnx.com/support/releasenotes/momentics_nc62i.html

It’s not in there.

Then we check the “Release notes”:

http://www.qnx.com/support/releasenotes/momentics_62r.html

It’s not in there.

Note also that this page, with “up to date release notes”,
is out of date.

Then we try the “Knowledge base” at

http://www.qnx.com/support/sd_bok/

and query for “Installer” on “QNX Neutrino”.

which returns 9 items, none of which appear to be relevant
to this issue. It’s not in there.

While this information may be in some other place, those
are the places which QNX’s own web site says are the
places to get installation instructions.

It’s a real problem. QSSL is shooting itself in the foot
with all these new install problems in 6.2.1. This isn’t
as bad as the “loads a system with incompatible kernel
and drivers” problem mentioned previously, but it’s
one of those things that damages QNX’s reputation for
working reliably.

It’s in the installation notes for 6.2.1A. I’ll see about adding it to the
other install notes on the website. I’m told that the 6.3 installer isn’t
going to check the dates anymore.

If there’s going to be a 6.2.1A, please make sure that the
run-from-CD-only mode works, with the right drivers. It’s
needed for compatibility testing.

Just to clarify:

  • 6.2.1A fixes up the per-seat licensing policy, but doesn’t contain
any new software. There’s a CD for it.

  • 6.2.1B is a patch to 6.2.1. It will be available for downloading, but
    not on a CD.

I have seen mention in these newsgroups of 6.3 several times now. But 6.3
isn’t mentioned on the web page at all. When is it expected out?

Hi Steve

I know that your only the messenger, so this shot isn’t meant for you. But
come one QSSL! Isn’t this getting a little silly (maybe a lot). There has
never been two releases of QNX Version 6 that were the same. NEVER!

In the good old QNX4 days there was always a Full Archive and an Update
archive. Would it kill anyone to make both available under QNX6. And once
there is a procedure thaT works STOP CHANGING IT!

Seconded…

Jim
