Firewire boards

Is there support for IEEE-1394 Firewire peripherals in QNX 6? For
example, through PCI adapters with OHCI standard interface.

I have only found some messages in qnxrtp.os about drivers for a
Mindready Firewire board which ceased to work under QNX 6.2.1.

Best regards,

Joaquín Ferruz

Mindready is your only official option that I found during my recent search.

Not that I want to bash Mindready - but their single licensing scheme is
that each dll is locked into a particular IEEE 1394 card. So if you have to
replace the IEEE 1394 card, you have to generate a new library file and
contact Mindready for a license key based on the new IEEE 1394 card :frowning:

Hi Mr Ferruz, Mr Jorgensen.

I am working for Mindready’s Tech Support Team.

First, our Sednet 1394 product line is working with version 6.2.1a o f QNX
RTOS.
Yes we had an issue with this version of QNX at some point, but it was fixed
promptly.

This software will give you all the tools needed to build any 1394
application for an OHCI PCI 1394 adapter.
It isn’t required to have a Mindready 1394 OHCI adapter but I strongly
recommend it (our software is always fully tested on our boards).

I hope that I have helped you.

Is it correct that your single license policy is that a dll is locked to a
particular OHCI IEEE 1394 adapter?

I don’t mean that say that you have to buy your OHCI adapter, but that each
dll gets locked to the serial number of a particular OHCI adapter with
somekind of dll build software.

Hi Mr Jorgensen,

You are right, to protect our software we are locking the functionalities to
the customer selected OHCI 1394 adapter.

each
dll gets locked to the serial number of a particular OHCI adapter with
somekind of dll build software.

I hope that I have helped you.

I am just trying to make people aware of this twist to your single license
policy. I know that was a major hang up for our company to chose your IEEE
1394 driver. Our products are not high quantity products so buying the
source code (~$30K) or committing to a high quantity were not options
either.

I wish QSSL would add native QNX support for IEEE 1394 - especially
considering IEEE 1394 advantages in the embedded/real-time market.

As a Mindready LLA customer, reality is more like this:

– What’s actually shipping as the Mindready LLA won’t work
reliably on 6.2.1. There are patches available, but you
have to ask for them, and they’re not integrated into
Mindready’s product distribution. Or so Mindready
support tells me. The change to the shared memory API
in QNX 6.2.1 broke the LLA software, and a new version
was needed. The symptom is that the whole machine crashes
on the first call to the LLA. There are also some problems
with installing from the Mindready install disk on 6.2.1.

– The “license manager” system is a huge hassle.
Authorizing a new device adapter requires running
programs, calling Mindready (during working hours Eastern
time), reading them numbers, and getting keys back. There
are some annoying bugs in the “licgui” program used to
stamp the key into the DLL. The license manager program
documented in the installation manual runs on Windows, and
the one that runs under QNX is something you have to ask for.

– Mindready tries to sell Firewire boards, but with Firewire support
being integrated into chipsets, Firewire boards are obsolete.

The software itself is OK. The technical support from a
developer perspective is good. The problems are all related to
packaging and the license manager system. Basically, figure on
wasting a day or two per install because of these problems,
more if the target machine and the development machine aren’t
in the same place.

I’d recommend that QNX buy out Mindready’s LLA package.
If this package were integrated into the QNX distribution,
life would be easier for everyone.
