Can't Boot/Install on a Dell Powerstation

I have a Dell Powerstation 350. I’m trying to install QNX on to it.
I can’t boot the CD. SO I built a boot floppy. But that won’t boot
either.

In either case I get the:
“Hit to boot alternate os:” followed by a bunch of dots
Finally I get a BIOS reset screen and the process starts all over
again.

I also tried the Alt OS (Non-DMA) on the CD. That didn’t work either.
The floppy didn’t seem to have an Alt OS.


What can I try next?

This system is a screemer (2.4GHz 1024MB RAM) and I’d really like to
use it.

I can build a custom OS on another system if there is anything I
should try.

I do want folks here to know that QSSL has helped with this problem.
There is a special bios.boot file that solves this problem.

Now that I have my screeming Dell booting QNX I have a new
problem. The best video mode that is supported is VESA.

Despite the speed of the processor, you can see it
painfully scrolling text lines in a pterm.

No luck with Nvidia. And as things stand now, I doubt there will be a new
driver. Nvidia might go the way of Voodoo in a year, unless they have
something really good up their sleeve for the Christmas season sales.

Of course we could hope that there will be another webcast about porting
Linux drivers, this time using Nvidia video driver as a case study :slight_smile:

Try running the SVGA driver instead. The will actually be slower
for many rendering operations, but thing like blitting will be

Of course the real solution would be to have an accelerated driver
available for newer nVidia chips. This depends one one of the

  1. We update our “tnt” driver with newer source from nVidia, which they

    success is not guaranteed with this approach, since we don’t
    have any chip docs, and could hit a brick wall if the ported

  2. nVidia provide use with docs, and we write a brand new driver.
  3. nVidia writes a driver, and makes it available.
  4. A third party creates a new driver, using our graphics DDK, and
    the source from the XFree distribution.
  1. is unlikely to happen for some time, as sales and management
    have deemed other projects to be of higher priority, and the
    development resources are not available at this time. I would
    consider working some extra hours to update the driver, but I’d be
    pretty foolish to invest my time this way, since the most I could
    expect to get in return is obnoxious, sneering, insulting comments
    from certain “enthusiasts”.

As for 2) and 3), I’ve no idea, but I have reason to believe that
3) is more likely to happen than 2).

So if anyone’s up for it, option 4) is open…

On this system I have installed several products from the 3rd products
CD. Most of them I don’t need, they just sounded interesting.

Now when I boot this system I get a message during startup of the
package filesystem that says:
Warning: Can’t find package [phbear/phhotkey_/core-0.5/MANIFEST]

This system is running 6.2.1B. The 3rd party CD is from 6.2.0
(I think).

What can I do to fix this?

If nothing, what can I do to uninstall the bad item?


BTW, I do want to say thanks you to QNX and the QNX community. In the
last few weks I have done some very impressive things on hardware that
I’ve never played with before. And most of it we got working with a
minimum amout of help from you.
