We are currently developing systems in NTO in which we would like to move to
RTP…
BUT!! the hardware that we use requires us to use PC104 hardware and as such
we have a Cirrus Logics chip as the video card.
I was bitterly disappointed when I fired up RTP with photon 2.0 to discover
there are no compatible drivers. This has basically halted/terminated any
development with RTP as it’s impossible to write anything that looks good in
640x480 at 8 bit color.
I have been informed that is enough people require the driver then something
may be done about it. So anyone who wants a Cirrus driver SHOUT!
I have already noticed a number of comments on the qdn news groups regarding
this matter.
How compatible is Photon 1.14 and Photon 2.0 in terms of porting the driver
between the two??
Does anyone else know of reliable PC104 video cards that are supported under
RTP? My problem is that I already have about 6 units which have the Cirrus
chips in them and I don’t want to purchase additional cards…
I think it would be a good idea to support some of the older chipsets
including Cirrus and perhaps a few of the other more popular ones.
There’s plenty of older machines around that can run RTP just fine except
that the video card isn’t supported.
I guess it depends how hard it is for QSSL to write the drivers. They seem
to be so good at it that they make it seem easy, although no other software
company seems to find it that easy.

When you SHOUT, make sure you specify what model of Cirrus driver. There
are so many of them.
Be prepared to send us one too since you really can’t just go to the store
and buy a Cirrus card.
And don’t get excited if you ever see a Cirrus driver… chances are it’s
for someone elses model, and won’t work on yours.
On the encouraging side, there will be a Graphics driver development kit
soon, so anyone who is truly motivated could do a driver that supports their
chip.

You’re probably aware Pete that about the only PCI video card you can
get for a PPC-based PCI/cPCI motherboard will be Cirrus Logic too. Just
my 0.02.

the waters here with innapropriate comparisons.
Fact is, we’ve assessed how much manpower we can allocate to supporting
this free release, and the supported hardware list reflects what we feel
we can support, and still have enough manpower left to earn a living.
I’m sorry if we don’t have everyone’s favourite brand of potato chips
available at this free BBQ, but as I mentioned before, when the GDDK is
out, anyone will be free to bring their own favourite fare to the party,
and share it with others if they so wish.

I’m not comparing anything Pete and I’m well aware that RTP is x86 only
at the moment. My (very little) point was, it is probably worth
supporting CirrusLogic because it is very common on PowerPC systems and
eventually you’ll probably port Photon 2.0 to PPC anyway, if not as part
of RTP for free then as an extra package for OEM Neutrino. I did not
mean to say anything more than you have just a little extra motivation
to support CL, aside from begging users.
