I selected the option “Shutdown and reboot” within photon.
The screen froze and display in the progress dialog
“Shutting Down Service Provider”.
I had to turn the computer off.

Hi,
Well, I want to understand this. In microkernel archs and most in RTP
each subsystem is a module. The kernel is just a small subset of
services.
If one module is failing the machine should not be frozen in fact. So if
you have a node net
you could rlogin or just slay the dev-graphic from the node which is
affected. Is this correct ?
So how comes that your machines got frozen? If the dev-graphic is frozen
it should be a way to get rid of it WITHOUT REBOOT!

Yes that’s true but in this case. A the point where it froze, the
networking part
has been shutdown already ( I can see that by the leds on the network card
going off)
I didn’t check if the numlock key was responding, so I don’t know if
it was really frozen or just unresponsive.
Even if you had network access, if you had a program consuming
all the CPU at priority higher then qnet, their isn’t anything you
could do remotly.

ok I understood. if qnet was going down it is really hard to find out if
it was really frozen the system.
But how about APM stuff. Could this affect your PC ? Most of the time I
am switching off the APM from BIOS since I ran in some troubles …

Could be, it’s a laptop

But if the graphics driver encounters an unrecoverable error and dies,
who is going to put the screen back into text mode?
If the network driver died, you won’t be able to access the machine
over the network, if the serial driver dies, you won’t be able to use a
shell over the serial port, if the keyboard/mouse driver dies, you won’t be
able to use them to do stuff, if the disk driver dies, you won’t be able
to load any commands from it to do anything, etc.
The moral of the story is that you’re always at the mercy of your hardware
and the software that drives it.
I have this problem too on my Dell laptop, in fact it happens every time.
The only way I can shut down is to select End Photon Session, then Exit to
text mode. At that point I just power it down. If I ever select shut down
the system it freezes.
It is a dell laptop to. I don’t usually do shutdown from photon, so I can’t
say if it’s every time. But it sure looks like something is fishy with
the dell laptops. If qssl people need my help to do some test, i’d
be happy to help.
