Using QNX AS-IS...

I work for a company that is looking to save some costs. We, in the
UNIX group, have been trying to find a small solution that would allow
us to use older 486 & Pentium™ hardware as thin clients. We found
QNX. All of the licensing we have read says that for non-commercial use
is free. Does this mean that for use in a setting that is not sold it’s
free? Can someone from QSSL clarify this for us?

Thanks!

QRTP (QNX RealTime Platform) is free for non-commercial use
so if you do not distribute it or use its components in a distribution,
it is ok.

The goal was to make the product available so people could play
with it, test it etc … and try the developement sit.

But you can call QNX.

If you read the licensing (which you must have done, since you clicked
on the button that says “I Agree” then you’ll notice that in
A.I.1.3, there is the statement:

“…provided that it is only used for personal use by an individual, and
not for the purpose of generating revenue or in-kind consideration or
for productive use of the QNX realtime platform in the operation of a
business or enterprise”.

It is pretty clear (to me) that the reference to “productive use of the
QNX realtime platform in the operation of a business or enterprise” in
the above statement, seeks to prohibit the type of use that Daniel
proposes, with respect to the terms of the PART A license grant (the
free for non-commercial use grant). I believe that using QNX as a thin
client constitutes “productive use of the QNX realtime platform”. This
having been said, I would talk to QNX about licensing for such use,
since the pricing might be attractive to the point that QNX offers the
overall lowest cost of ownership (by function) of any alternative
(including Linux) for this purpose.

I would say no, but I am not associated with QNX.

From the end user license agreement:
(3) to use the QNX Realtime Platform as an end-user, provided that it is
only for personal use by an individual and not for the purpose of generating
revenue or in-kind consideration or for productive use of the QNX Realtime
Platform in the operation of a business or enterprise.

In other words i can use QNX in my house, i can create my documents and
print, use Internet, etc. But i cannot use in my Office or any Bussiness,
also i cannot sell in distributions or use this for any commercial purposes.

that rises the question for me : when I introduce QNX 6 into a school
for teaching (non-profit!!) can I do that ?? e.g. let the kids play with
it ?? seems to be a very nausty question - or ??

This is a good publicity for QNX!, a good idea it´s to write to QNX staff to
want a authorization as possible, and speaking about your “learning” app.

Walter, that was what I was thinking - in particular as the German
afiliation of QSSL is just around the corner from here. I’ll see them
next week anyway …
