I’m trying to direct some messages to a different log file that is different
from the default /var/log/syslog file.
I’ve configured my /etc/syslog.conf file to send user messages to the
/var/log/usrlog with the line:
user.* /var/log/usrlog
and, of course made sure the file was there.
I start up the syslogd with defaults; it should point to the
/etc/syslog.conf file for configuration, right?
In my application, I made the call to openlog():
openlog(“myApp”,LOG_CONS|LOG_PERROR|LOG_PID,LOG_USER);
The first call the the syslog followed right afterward. It was:
syslog(LOG_INFO,“Starting myApp”);
Neither that syslog call or any others showed up in the /var/log/usrlog or
anywhere else? What gives? What am I missing?
Thanks for the help.

David Kuechenmeister
I tried this here on a QNX6.2 system. I used the same setup that you
explained in your post but was unable to reproduce the problem. Can you
verify that you have enough permissions on your /var/log/usrlog file?

Thanks,
I’m on the system as root and the permissions for the file are:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 0 Nov 15 18:36 usrlog
This is in the /var/log directory.

Could you try the attached test case to see if this works? If it doesn’t
could you please send me the output from ‘uname -a’ and ‘pidin’ as well as
your ‘/etc/syslog.conf’?
Thanks,
Dave B.
