Right now you can’t but that functionality will be added soon.

If I can add that it would be of great value if, when a given application
was maximized, it could take the shelf into account. That is, a maximized
application would not cover the shelf. Ideally there would be an option that
would permit the user to chose which shelf to include in this process (but
for a first run just an option that said, don’t cover any shelf would be
great).

I also would like to see this. Right now, I have to manually resize every
app I open so it fills only the space not including the shelfs.

This is how maximize works in the new version of RTP available now.
