Login screen hangs

I have the following problem with all our machines, I think it might be
Photon related. The machine is showing the login screen, after a while the
screen save comes on, i.e., the login dialog moves around. If I now try to
login, the screensaver disables and the whole screen locks up.
The funny thing is I can still telnet to that machine, but I don’t know what
to slay etc. to unlock the frozen screen.
Happened to anybody else?
Thanks
Markus

Can you still move the mouse pointer around?

You could try slaying phlogin. If that doesn’t help, try slaying
Photon. If a SIGTERM doesn’t help, try a SIGHUP.

But first, could you run pidin from the telnet session and post the
results here?

Happened to anybody else?

Not to me, but I think I have heard something similar before.

Hi Markus,

Do you have a TNT graphics card in your system? If so there was a bug with
DPMS and the screen saver with TNT cards that has been fixed. However
it hasn’t been released in a patch as of yet.

I have a TNT graphics card and this happens to me ALL of the time. If I
don’t catch the initial log in screen, the screen is locked. In addition, I
use a screen saver (it doesn’t matter which one, I’ve tried them all, yes
even Blank) which works fine all day long. However, EVERY (yes every)
morning, the screen is locked.
Dan.

phlogin was not running, but slaying Photon did the trick. This obviously
does not “fix” the problem, but it eliminates rebooting.

I have an Elsa Erazor card, but it seems to happen with other machines that
have different cards as well.

Hi Dan

As mentioned we got this fixed internally and this should make it out in a
patch soon.

One thing you could do is pass the -T option to phlogin and put a ridiculous
amount of seconds afterwards (10000000000) that way the screen saver won’t
get turned on.

Erick.

what
to slay etc. to unlock the frozen screen.

Hi Marcus,
I have also this bug, The thing is that IF you move the mouse, It locks up.
But if you type a character it works…
Try it…

I have the following problem with all our machines, I think it might be
Photon related. The machine is showing the login screen, after a while the
screen save comes on, i.e., the login dialog moves around. If I now try to
login, the screensaver disables and the whole screen locks up.
The funny thing is I can still telnet to that machine, but I don’t know
what
to slay etc. to unlock the frozen screen.
Happened to anybody else?
Thanks
Markus

Ok, the thing that confused me was that you were talking about a bug related
to TNT graphics cards, and I have an Elsa Now the output of pci -vvv
(attached) shows me that the Elsa card obviously uses an TNT chipset?

As mentioned we got this fixed internally and this should make it out in a
patch soon.
Good

One thing you could do is pass the -T option to phlogin and put a
ridiculous
amount of seconds afterwards (10000000000) that way the screen saver won’t
get turned on.
Ok, great. Where is phlogin started, which file do I have to modify?

Thanks for all your help.
Markus

Erick.

Hi Markus,

Do you have a TNT graphics card in your system? If so there was a bug
with
DPMS and the screen saver with TNT cards that has been fixed. However
it hasn’t been released in a patch as of yet.

Hi Markus,

Could you please post the output from pci -vvv?

My news reader doesn’t or I haven’t figured out how to (most likly I
haven’t found it yet) save and view attachments.

So if you could please post the output as a followup
that would be great.

Thanks

Erick.

Markus

Erick.

even Blank) which works fine all day long. However, EVERY (yes every)
morning, the screen is locked.

Hi Markus,

Do you have a TNT graphics card in your system? If so there was a bug
with
DPMS and the screen saver with TNT cards that has been fixed. However
it hasn’t been released in a patch as of yet.

Markus Loffler <> loffler@ces.clemson.edu> > wrote:
I have the following problem with all our machines, I think it might
be
Photon related. The machine is showing the login screen, after a
while
the
screen save comes on, i.e., the login dialog moves around. If I now
try
to
login, the screensaver disables and the whole screen locks up.
The funny thing is I can still telnet to that machine, but I don’t
know
what
to slay etc. to unlock the frozen screen.
Happened to anybody else?
Thanks
Markus

Hi Markus,

Could you please post the output from pci -vvv?

My news reader doesn’t or I haven’t figured out how to (most likly I
haven’t found it yet) save and view attachments.

So if you could please post the output as a followup
that would be great.

Thanks

Erick.

Ok, the thing that confused me was that you were talking about a bug
related
to TNT graphics cards, and I have an Elsa Now the output of pci -vvv
(attached) shows me that the Elsa card obviously uses an TNT chipset?

As mentioned we got this fixed internally and this should make it out
in a
patch soon.
Good

One thing you could do is pass the -T option to phlogin and put a
ridiculous
amount of seconds afterwards (10000000000) that way the screen saver
won’t
get turned on.
Ok, great. Where is phlogin started, which file do I have to modify?

Thanks for all your help.
Markus

I have a TNT graphics card and this happens to me ALL of the time.
If I
don’t catch the initial log in screen, the screen is locked. In
addition, I
use a screen saver (it doesn’t matter which one, I’ve tried them all,
yes
even Blank) which works fine all day long. However, EVERY (yes
every)
morning, the screen is locked.

Hi Markus,

Do you have a TNT graphics card in your system? If so there was a
bug
with
DPMS and the screen saver with TNT cards that has been fixed.
However
it hasn’t been released in a patch as of yet.

I have the following problem with all our machines, I think it
might
be
Photon related. The machine is showing the login screen, after a
while
the
screen save comes on, i.e., the login dialog moves around. If I
now
try
to
login, the screensaver disables and the whole screen locks up.
The funny thing is I can still telnet to that machine, but I don’t
know
what
to slay etc. to unlock the frozen screen.
Happened to anybody else?
Thanks
Markus

The same thing has happened to me. It occurs on a laptop with a
neomagic video chip.
