voyager questions?

Why do I get errors when I visit some site saying that I need Netscape 4 or
IE 4 so that I can veiw the site or be able to get the full feature of the
site - like downloading files? How can I solve this problem?

This problem has affected many pages that I’ve tried to look at. If I
recall, one is Amazon.com. Is there a way to tell Voyager to lie and claim
that it is something else?

This just means that when the site was written, it was written in such a
way as to take advantage of Netscape 4 or Explorer features. If you´re
not using one of these browsers you may not see the page in the way it
was intended.

Proxies, such as Internet Junkbuster
(http://internet.junkbuster.com/ijb.html) can do this. It’s GPL and
works on Unix. I’d guess a QNX port wouldn’t be difficult.

A better suggestion might be to refuse to patronize sites that do this.
Ideally, make sure you let them know why they’ve lost your business.

Hi Jim

I am one of the biggest porponents that QSSL has. But let’s face it, if we
(the QNX community) take that approach, the rest of the world will just say,
“Yeah, OK. So we’ll loose 0.02 % of our possible business.”

Who is the bigger looser, them, or me who can’t buy a damn book from Amazon?

I have developed business web pages. I have used features like if Netscape
do this, else if IE do that. But I always provided a othewise use this
plain vinella way. They SHOULD do that. But they don’t. Yet, Voyager will
struggle through and display a page if it is given the opportunity. SO why
not just allow the user to lie and say, “OK. I know that I’m claiming to be
something that I’m not, and maybe that will bite me in the ass, but I WANT
to display this page as best I can even though the page says not to display
for Voyager.”

QNX community ain’t the Microsoft community. We can’t bully
people around.

I’m not so naive that I would expect them to design a Voyager only
page. But it’s a basic of good web design to build pages that degrade
gracefully. So the right thing to do when you don’t recognize the
browser is not to refuse to serve pages, but instead serve generic HTML
that any browser should be able to handle.

Who is the bigger looser, them, or me who can’t buy a damn book
from Amazon?

Them, since you can buy the book from bn.com or one of the many other
online book vendors. I can’t believe that all of them use this
obnoxious behavior.

Also, by complaining, you may make create awareness of the problem in
someone who is in the position to do something about it. Note that if
they pulled this on a blind person using Lynx with text-to-speech
software, they might be risking an ADA lawsuit.

Which is why I suggested the Junkbuster proxy as a way to work around
the problem if you really have no alternative.
