PED: copy/paste suggestion

Hi,

I have a suggestion for PED. It would be nice if PED
supported the same copy/paste shortcut keys as many other
editors.

Copy - Ctrl + Insert
Paste - Shift + Insert

These shortcuts are very fast to use… When marking text
with Shift + arrow keys the Ctrl and Insert keys are just
finger-distance away. Much faster than having to jump to
Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V.

I would prefer if YOU could specify what you wanted the shortcut to be, as I
hate using CTRL + INSERT / SHIFT + INSERT.
It’s all a matter of personal preference, and what sort of background you
come from. Me, I come from a mainly Windows background. No matter what
operating system I use, I immediatly reach for CTRL-C and CTRL-V to cut and
paste. If these don’t work, it annoys me!

While I know the preverbial “why should we do it the Windows way” will rear
it’s ugly head now, I still think the option to let the end user choose
would be the best solution.

OK, if you have windows background, then try: Wordpad, Notepad, MS Word,
MS-DOS Edit. They all support ctrl+insert and shift+insert. Try the older
Borland IDEs like Borland C++ 3.1, etc. etc. etc.

It’s a matter of taste, yes of cource!
But there is nothing stopping PED from supporting both ways.

I think that CTRL+INSERT, SHIFT+INSERT are still here (I not so sure for all
software) only for compatibility because all new applications now use CTRL-C,
CTRL-V and I suppose old hotkeys will desappeared in the futur.

I think one of the problem with CTRL-C on Unix is that it is associated
with sending a SIGINT, for example shells use it.

Very true. For me it feels wrong to press CTRL-C in an application.

Anyways, I think it would be a terrible waste of valuable keyboard space if
the only function the INSERT key had was to toggle between Insert and
Overwrite
mode.

I did not know that!
But still, the standard shortcut in Windows is CTRL-C etc.

Not that I"m aware of.

You misinterpreted what I said. I meant I would prefer if the USER could
specify.

Yes.
If you have a group of users who want it one way and a group of users who
want it a different way, why not give the option to the user?
You could, of course, just let the program support BOTH ways of doing
things.

I’d add my support for this. I use both methods when using windows. I tended
to mostly use CTRL-c until I started using xemacs for windows where
CTRL-Insert is required. It is particularly nice in a telnet session to be
able to use the Insert varieties as CTRL C down a telnet session is likely
to have an undesired effect. This would also map very nicely into the photon
terminal environment - much nicer than CTRL ALT SHIFT P or whatever it is
