some QNX-photos

I am one of the lucky people with a window (just happened that the space was avail in
our dept. The idea of an office is kinda nice, makes for a bit less distractions
in and around you (right now I hear the photo copier that is about 25-30 ft away). Yet
when you get acustomed to it, I find that it has many advantages (now that I am
saying this I will never get an office  ).

Is QSSL’s work space designed as cubes ? Here in Europe is a bit more
good: everybody has its own room with window or 2 guys sitting in the
same room.

Actually, with all the recent hiring, we have gone to bunk cubes.

That’s only for QA and Tech Support of course. R&D still have individual
offices with hot tubs, saunas, and wet bars.

The build group tried something they called productivity tubes' for a while, but I don't think it worked out as well as they'd hoped. They've gone back to the industry standard habitrail’ style cubicle with exercise
wheel and integral drink dispenser.

The kernel group wants to go with Rubiks cubicles, but they’ll have to wait
until we build another extension… apparently you need special equipment
built into the ceilings to support them.

The sales folk still like the traditional square cubicle. I suspect it’s
because they seem to be playing some kind of long term checkers game
moving people from cube to cube and back, jumping each other, and
occasionally getting crowned.

Anway, glad to give you more insight into how things work here Stefan. If
there’s anything else you’re curious about, ask away

Perhaps the picture is of Donna Ronayne?..

Distinct seasons? Dry/wet? Lush/desert?

As I recall, they get two seasons a week, both extreme. ;v)

It’s about the same climate as San Francisco, sort of mild. Hot in summer,
and cool but not too cold in Winter. As Colin suggests, Melbourne is also
renowned for having all four seasons in one day.

Gee, it is nice to know I’m missed.

Yeah, Pete is good people. I miss working with him. You are right; he’d
probably be a great candidate for the end-of-year message tradition I
started so very long ago.

Florida is nice, esp. at this time of year (the weather will be pleasant
from now until mid-May or later) but I miss seeing the autumn leaves.
However, it makes commuting to work on my motorcycle (2000 Triumph Sprint
ST) a real pleasure! Actually I’m hoping to take the family back to
Canada at Christmas to visit relatives. So we might have to endure winter
weather for a week or so.

I knew it was time to retire from QSSL (after 13 years) when I went around
the building the last Christmas Eve I was there and, instead of finding
myself alone, there were a few people still working. What was worse was
that I didn’t recognize all of them!

I recall the year that I predicted in my seasonal message that fax machines
would take over from teletypes. I also said that email and electronic
document exchange would largely take over from faxes eventually. People
said I was crazy! Right. (This gives some people an idea of how long ago I
started the tradition that Bill is referring to).

However the tradition I started lives on, sort of. All three Christmas Eves
I’ve been here I was the last one to go home. I went around the office,
made sure monitors were powered down and the lights were off.

But somehow it just isn’t the same. When you make a decision you have to
live with it. No regrets … ever.

Pete, if you are the last one to leave, please remember to turn out the
lights.

Pete,

I’m nominating you to take over the “Turn Out the Lights” (or whatever it
was called) post at the end of December 31st each year from our beloved
Bill
Flowers. I miss it.

For those of you who haven’t been around for years and years and don’t know
what I mean, if Pete is half as good as Bill was, your in for a treat.
MIND
YOU, Pete is a VERY different character from what Bill was. A little
freaky, but having read much of what Pete has written over the years I
think
he can put a great new spin on it.

P.S. Bill we miss you. I hope your enjoying sunny Florida while all your
friends that helped make QNX such a great OS (as you did too) have to
endure
those Canadian winters.

End of B.S.> (Oops I mean P.S.)

I wish I could see something half that exciting. I used to be able to see a

yet another drab concrete building going up, blocking what was my only view.

I’ve given this some consideration, and I am going to respectfully
decline, although I’m flattered that you think enough of my ramblings
to make the suggestion.

The truth is that Bill’s posts were a great tradition, but I don’t
think it would honour that tradition to have someone else do them
instead. They are and always will be Bill’s Christmas posts.

I think it’s actually more appropriate for those of us who remember
them to get that little pang of nostalgia when there is no such post.
It reminds us that all things must end… as Bill pointed out… it’s
likely that the lights here now stay on over the Holidays.
