QNX developer community

Hello,

I’ve just joined QNX as a manager of the QNX Developer’s Community - my job
is to make sure your needs as developers are being properly met through QNX
programs and initatives. This includes listening to your needs as
developers and ensuring that we have the right “stuff” in place to support
you.

For some background info, I’ve been in DSP tools development for Texas
Instruments for a number of years so the embedded world is not new to me,
but the QNX aspect of it is. I’d like us to work together as developers and
exchange ideas in what we can do to further foster a great developer
community. As a start, I’d appreciate your taking a bit of time in answering
some questions about the on-line QNX developer’s network (QDN.QNX.COM) as it
is today - your feedback will serve to improve your (and your customers’)
experiences with a growing network of QNX developers/experts…

In your mind, what makes a good on-line community?
What are some of your favourite on-line developer portals? Why?
What portion(s) of the QDN website (qdn.qnx.com) do you find most/least
useful for helping you in your development?
What would you like to see more/less of in QDN (eg. would you like to see
more interaction with other users)?
What do you find QNX can do to improve the developer perception of QNX?
These are some questions - feel free to add your comments and expand as you
see fit. Send me your feedback, your suggestions, and anything you’d like to
see change as we start this process. Your input is incredibly valuable in
making this happen!

Thanks
Haris

lol! Unfortunately I haven seen anyone from here post in
alt.sex.*, they must be looking only, hihi!

But seriously I have been debating with myself if a “cafe” type of
conference
was appropriate for inn.qnx.com. There are places for that on the web,
www.qnxstart.com being one of them  (but it’s down now)
At the end I concluded that I think there should be a place

I second the motion. Kind of like quics/etc/etc.

That’s actually not that bad of an idea. Most of the public forums on the
internet are spammed to death so having an area that fewer people are aware
of/have access to would be nice. Then we can talk to all the nice QNX
community without having to filter out the 1337 k1dd13z.

I think first is mailling lists ( for developers, like questions@freebsd.org and
so on ). Second is web-based (quick) disscussion forum.
Third - simple form for visitors to ask questions.

What are some of your favourite on-line developer portals? Why?

qnx.org.ru
Just kidding.
Sourceforge is nice, but it looks overloaded.

What portion(s) of the QDN website (qdn.qnx.com) do you find most/least
useful for helping you in your development?

  1. Online documentation
  2. Articles

What would you like to see more/less of in QDN (eg. would you like to see
more interaction with other users)?

What do you find QNX can do to improve the developer perception of QNX?

Maybe detailed commentary of cvs.qnx.com stuff ?
Coding examples i guess.

These are some questions - feel free to add your comments and expand as you

For sure I ( as almost every russian qnx user ) want to see QDN translated.

I would reccomend that you make this into an online survey on
qdn.qnx.com, perhaps offer some nice QNX t-shirts or something to the
first 100 respondents.

As for the general QNX developer community, there are already some
excellent places online where this exists. The first and one of the
most beneficial to developers, both new and old is IRC (Internet Relay
Chat). There is a regular presense from some of the active developers
from QSSL. A private server has been set up and operating for over a
year and I would encourage everyone to visit it.

IRC Server: irc.joher.com
Port: 6667
Channel: #qnx

You can download phirc (photon IRC) from http://www.joher.com/phirc
there are photon clients available for both QNX4 and QNX6.

There was a very active web portal called QNX Start, which unfortunately
has been suffering some uptime issues.

http://www.qnxstart.com

The site is offline at the moment, but we are all hopefull that it will
return soon.

There is also a new community web portal that is under development
called QNX Zone. I have been co-ordinating several volunteers in the
design of the new site and we are hoping to get it online before the end
of the year if at all possible. You can find out more about the project
by viewing the slides that are online at:

If you want to get involved in this project, please feel free to contact
me via email, or in IRC.

hosting of additional news groups as part of your portal isn’t a good
idea.
We can can download with our DSL connection with a speed of up to 90KB/s

why??

More articles about advanced topics as add-on to the sparse docs.

I have to agree here. Steve et al have done a fantastic job with the docs

for QNX4. But it has taken a decade to get them so polished. (Good grief,
I remember the QNX2 docs and what a desaster they were.)

QNX6 is a very different beast from QNX4. It is organized differently and
so are the docs. It is always a major ordeal for me when I have to look up
something for the first time. The information is never where I think it
should be.

The information in the articles is good but it needs to work its way into
the docs. BTW, the articles need to be posted here on qdn too. They used
to be. At least a link.

Steve, this isn’t meant to be a slam. I know that with only 50 or so people
working on docs everything just takes time. Keep up the good work.

hosting of additional news groups as part of your portal isn’t a good

I’m not exactly sure I understand what you are talking about. The
concept behind the newsgroups is merely to provide an HTML front-end to
the groups on inn.qnx.com. The site itself will generate some of it’s
own community, so there may be good reasons to add groups that are local
only to qnxzone. We would rather have QSSL add additional groups
(non-qnxzone related) that are community related on inn.qnx.com and we
would then allow the HTML interface to them.

The primary reason for providing this is due to the fact that other than
tin, there are no real news-reader solutions for QNX6. Vmail is not
stable enough to accomodate this, and we feel it is crucial to the QNX
community to have everyone with access to those groups.

We can can download with our DSL connection with a speed of up to 90KB/s

What domain did you test against, and how did you test? The actual
domain for qnxzone exists, but does not point at the actual server, so
I’m a bit interested in how you tested. If you really want to know
why a particular site performs faster or slower than others, you’ll need
to use the traceroute command, and possibly ping as well. I’ll be
surprised if you get 90KB/sec from every site on the internet. In any
event, share your results.

Cheers,
Camz.

What would you like to see more/less of in QDN (eg. would you like to see
more interaction with other users)?

I think about devtools gap! ddd through phindows (Xphoton in fact), qnx
makefiles documentation and examples.

What do you find QNX can do to improve the developer perception of QNX?
These are some questions - feel free to add your comments and expand as you
see fit. Send me your feedback, your suggestions, and anything you’d like to
see change as we start this process. Your input is incredibly valuable in
making this happen!

Thanks
Haris
