http://get.qnx.com has changed for the worse!

Hi,

Has anyone visited http://get.qnx.com recently? I have and I’m unhappy with
it to say the least. The auditing process users and developers are FORCED to
go through is unacceptable.

If you visit get.qnx.com you’ll notice the following fields:

First Name
Last Name
Email
Title
Company
Address
Suite or P.O. Box:
City
Country
Zip/Postal Code
Web
“What types of devices/applications are you interested in building? Please
select by category - check all that apply.”
“What will be the target processor in your embedded device? If more than
one, check all that apply.”
What is your Operating System?
How did you learn about QNX?

Now, here’s the funny part; after some tests these are the following are
REQUIRED fields:

First Name
Last Name
Email
Title
Company
Address
City
Country
“What types of devices/applications are you interested in building? Please
select by category - check all that apply.”
“What will be the target processor in your embedded device? If more than
one, check all that apply.”
What is your Operating System?
How did you learn about QNX?

Yep, just about all of them are REQUIRED - Now lets take a look at some
fields to help understand why exactly I have problems with them…

“Title”: Hobbyist… Umm… not in the list… damm… oh well, looks like I
can’t download, or I’ll have to lie (which I WILL NOT do).

“Company”: Don’t have one… damm again!

“What types of devices/applications are you interested in building? Please
select by category - check all that apply”: Umm… I’m just interested in
learning about the OS in general I had no real projects in mind… “BUT
wait” you say, “you could type that in other!” - “but” I say, “‘other’ has a
maximum character length of 30 characters”… Damm again…

“What will be the target processor in your embedded device? If more than
one, check all that apply”: I don’t have an embedded device weren’t you
paying attention? It’s required too… damm it all! ; O

There are some major flaws in the current registration process that are sure
to frighten away developers and users, I’m hoping this isn’t intentional but
it’s sure looking that way. Prior we just had to type in our e-mail, it
would suffice in my mind and I’d have no problems with it. The fields that
are now required are amazingly intrusive and do not cover all instances,
potentially preventing users from completing (and hence downloading, trying,
and experementing).

QSSL, Why are you doing this? Don’t you know the end result of it will not
lead to potent statistics - it will lead to a smaller user base, and
statistics that are mutated by users who will rush through it not giving a
dammm about QSSL marketing needs. Look at the past form, how many people
used a fraudulent email? Do you honestly feel that by making the form longer
your more likely to see honesty? How nieve are you?

Sorry if I seem harsh, but I find the new form an insult to users like me
and as such I’m writing this out of anger.

Travis “TheAlien” Coady
smallfri@bigfoot.com

PS: I personally would rather not fill out a form (thusly, no download) then
to blatantly lie on it - But that’s just the kind of person I am.

Hi,

I miss also a statement about privacy … how are these personal/company
related data handled? Will they be sold to third parties a.s.o ? …

Indeed,

I’ll add some more comments in the hope the form will be fixed quickly
for the better.

  • Its obvious marketing made that form - if QSSL made an embeded OS
like that made that form they’d loose alot of customers quickly… (I say
this with love of course ;o)

  • My comments in the first thread were only so harsh and childish as
I was worried about the hobbiest/enthusist community. I love QNX and QSSL.

  • The form should be more fixable, consider adding “Enthusist” or
“Hobbiest” to the title, or change the title as a whole and then auditing
the form as such, also notes are good. “Type your company name here” is not
sufficent, somthing like “Type your company name here if applicaple, if not
type a dash (-)” is. I can understand QSSL’s need to not see companies
develop with QNX unnotticed - but QSSL needs to respect users who are (1)
    doing indepent non-embeded developement or (2) Hobbiests/Enthusists.

Hey Travis,

If you noticed recently, Harris has recently taken over the developer
relations websites on qnx.com. This also includes get.qnx.com as well. It’s
my understanding that this form is part of a registration process which is
in the midst of an overhaul. All of the issues you just mentioned have been
brought up. There is a chance that this form will go away entirely, to be
replaced with an install-time registration system.

As for a message about privacy … that should have been up there from the
start. To my knowledge, we have never sold or transmitted this registration
data to anyone. Nor have I ever heard of any official - or unofficial
intention to do so. Next week I’ll ping Harris to see that there’s something
from legal linked on that page.

Thanks,

Travis,

Thanks for the feedback - you’ve raised some very good points in regards to
the registration form, however the primary reason behind its redesign is to
get better information from our user base to make sure we can offer you as
the user the best targetted support available. We’d like to know who our
users are to make sure we can give them what they’d need in the way of
products and support and thus far the response has been largely positive.

The ‘hobbyist’ category will be added into the TITLE field, as you’ve
requested. You can enter ‘N/A’ for the COMPANY field if not applicable. In
addition, there is a ‘don’t know’ button for the embedded device target
processor that you could use. ‘Other’ fields can also be used to specify
further details.

As we move further with a registration system for the QNX Developers
Network, we’ll consider the issues you’ve raised when developing the new
interface. I appreciate you being honest and providing us with feedback
thus far.

As for the privacy statement, it is currently being revised and will be
posted ASAP. Thanks for your patience.

best regards
Haris

Haris, do you think really that QNX6 is targeting o n l y embedded
D E V I C E S (e.g. embedded in printers)?

Is this question to point out that QSSL don’t want the use of QNX6 as a
development platform or a general purpose desktop system (e.g. SCADA)?
