Does anyone else find it as frustrating as I do that there are these
beautiful machines built by Apple (the latest is the Dual 1GHz G4) for
which QNX supports the processor, but upon which we can not run QNX
(only some lame Mach derivative).
I realize I get more bang-for-the buck on x86, but I want my development
machine to have the most bang (even if it is less bang per buck).
IMO, Apple is missing a lot of $ out there, by not opening up their
hardware to other O/S’s (I would gladly pay the same price for the
machine, and toss OSX in the trash).
Are there any others out there who would gladly drop $3600.00 for a dev
box with the following specs ? :
Dual 1-GHz PowerPC G4
256K L2 cache & 2MB L3 cache per processor
1.5GB SDRAM memory
2x80GB Ultra ATA drive
SuperDrive (4.7 GB writable DVD)
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
Built in Gigabit Ethernet
400 Mbit Firewire
USB
You know, on something like that gcc compiles might actually be quick
rant off.
btw: While I dreaming, there was talk (many years ago) that Neutrino
would use the altivec instructions to do IPC, does anyone know if this
was ever implemented (it seems that this would be an awesome boost for a
message passing OS - i.e. 0 copy message passing on a 2Ghz box - yikes!) ?

Not that’d we run on that right now, but it least it’s got a public
spec.

Yes it was.

Looks yummy; but the dual G4 mentioned is not available yet. It’d sure
be nice if QNX did run on one of these (not quite the PowerMac though).
Yes it was.
Cool.
I concur with your frustration, but I can also sympathize with
any reluctance QSSL might have. Face it, QNX makes money selling
end user licenses these days. They’ve provided an x86 development
environment that is quite reasonable, not to mention a very large
part of the market. You could also ask why they don’t support
sun workstations. I think in both cases they reason correctly
that it will not increase their market share, but will be a large
manpower project that will have no end. Maybe some day if QSSL
grows large enough to take a sizable bite out of MS’s market
share, they will have the resources and interest.
