QNX RTOS Tops Windows CE
in OS Shoot-out
OTTAWA, January 31, 2002 - In a showdown with Microsoft Windows CE, the QNX®
RTOS once again defended its position as the most powerful and reliable
realtime operating systems for embedded developers. According to a study by
Dedicated Systems Experts, the QNX RTOS v6.1 significantly outperformed
Windows CE 3.0 in several tests.

The Dedicated Systems report, entitled, “Comparison Between QNX RTOS v6.1
and Windows CE 3.0” pitted the two operating systems against each other in a
number of categories, including API richness, technical support, and tools.
QNX clearly outranked Windows CE in OS architecture, ease of installation,
and various tests of realtime performance, while remaining on par with
Windows CE in other categories.

In its report, Dedicated Systems noted QNX’s proven track record of
reliability in the RTOS industry. “While Windows CE is a newcomer to the
RTOS world, this is certainly not the case for its competitor,” the report
read. “The QNX RTOS has been around for quite a while and has always been
perceived as a high-quality RTOS by the industry. It lived up to that
reputation during this evaluation: throughout the tests, it performed fast
and predictably, and never showed any signs of instability.”

“The QNX RTOS is known first and foremost for reliability, whether it’s
powering high-end routers, medical instruments, 911 emergency response
systems, or the telematics system in your car,” said Alec Saunders, vice
president of marketing at QNX Software Systems. “In fact, it’s not unusual
for QNX-based systems to deliver fives-nines or even six-nines uptime - that
's less than 30 seconds downtime a year. And the reason is simple: the QNX
RTOS offers a memory-protected microkernel architecture found in no other
competing OS, including Windows CE.”

As senior vice president of product management for International Game
Technology (IGT), the world’s leading producer of slot and video gaming
machines, Rich Pennington recognizes the need for enhanced functionality and
reliability. “Our gaming products - especially those that combine 3D
graphics, video streaming, and special audio effects -demand an operating
system such as the QNX RTOS that provides a stable, easy-to-configure
development environment,” Pennington said. “We need to incorporate
technology that has demonstrated its reliability and availability time and
time again, and that is exactly why we opted for the QNX RTOS.”
